Well, not to impressed so far.

Told them i'd drop the knife off last Tuesday, arrived to discover the guy who does it wouldnt be in until Wednesday

Realized i wouldnt be able to get back to the shop and asked them to deliver it

Now they are insisting that i pay for delivery

I wont be paying thats for sure, told them if anything i was expecting a refund of what i paid in the first place, 1p more than the delivery charge.

Saga continues, i've been very polite and friendly so far, only got one more polite email in me i suspect.

Wouldnt recomend The Japanese Knife Company to anyone :( (Baker Street branch)

If i'm forced to pay or travel to london i'll be billing the company for every penny i've wasted pffft

Did you take pictures before giving it in again?

Yeah, got an email trail of all the discussion on the issue too; including my initial inquiry about their ability to do the scandi grind properly

They dont really have much defense, i'm surprised they are even trying to charge anything

If they rectify the fault then that would be good.
If they sell specialised knives they should know how to sharpen then correctly. Here there might be a communication problem. Sharpening is such a more complex a subject than most realise. I wouldn't trust any high street or commercial knife sharpening service as the time to do it right just doesn't make commercial sense.

All will be revealed when you pick up. What do they charge?

I'm still waiting for it to be returned

I paid a fiver initially, its now cost me another £15 to get into london to return it; and they want me to pay another fiver for delivery. Ugh.

Now explained to them the concept of Liability, and running out of patience. I could have sent the knife to the makers to repair and still had time to spare.

There was no communication problem, you dont alter a knife unless asked, and i did not ask them to. The fact it was only damaged (extra bevel) on one side indicates it was a mistake due to lack of experience imo

Sounds like it's been a total cockup from start to finish. Like there was evil forces behind it, you where never meant to have your knife sharpened property by them.

I'd bill them for the mess they've made, all the inconvenience it's caused you.

keep all communication and try to remain as civil as possible.
If all else fails there is always the small claims court.

Perhaps a post on there Facebook page or Twitter might motivate them along....

That would have been my next step, but pointing out their liability did the trick

It arrived back today, finally.

Still isnt perfectly flat grind as it was when i brought it in, but now its only the top inch, which i can live with, the main part i use for paper thin shavings is flat.

Its also filthy (i assume grind matirial worked into the wood), but thats probably not a suprise given the amount of work they gave themselves with the original mistake

Not impressed by any of this, first time i've bothered looking for a "professional" shop to fix a knife, and its definitely put me off lol

But, it is very very sharp, at least.

Please post a picture of the knife in the condition now, and tell us the name of the shop, so we know to avoid it.

You've been given appalling customer service.

This all reminds me I need to drop my kitchen knives at Bass Pro to be sharpened. I should probably give them a call first to be sure they still sharpen them for free.

Thought so.
Went in there some years ago to browse around and asked the chap there about how they sharpened. I was hoping for a demo or just a conversation with a fellow knife user. It was a certainly a strange conversation! I could comfortably sharpen my knives as I wanted, (if my kitchen knife can shave I am willing to call it done) so I was asking for him to talk me through how they sharpen and to hear his thoughts on grit and technique...the guy in the shop could not get his head around this and insisted that I show him how I sharpened, using his kit and a pretty dull knife, and then proceeded to tell me all the things I was doing wrong. If you have ever tried to demo something to an audience, times that feeling of things not going quite right by ten. I really couldn't have given a flying monkey about trying to sharpen his knife and, being taught sharpening 101 wasn't why I was there or why I wanted to chat. It was all very discordant and I left as soon as possible vowing not to bother with them in the future.

My son bought a couple of Japanese kitchen knives and wet stones from them.
They showed him how to sharpen them using what he bought, and he demonstrated that to me.
I let him sharpen a couple of knives, and what they taught him seemed to work as they turned out well.

Could it be that different guys there are differently skilled?

I would suggest a review on their facebook page anyway....
