Can I make a suggestion? A polythene tarp glued outside the hull will cure your leaks. I helped to raise a sunken narrowboat once, we used one wrapped around the sink outlets and windows. It worked.

As to a keel, an extra bit of ply clamped to the side will work. It needs to be removable, otherwise you might find it grounds. But try it without; you may be alright.

You haven't upset me with the Seagull! I don't like them and I don't think you will either soon, but it's your choice.

i know how badly they smoke. thats why i would like the idea of going to 25;1 rather than the very smog like 10;1 oil mix, but its better than rowing for 100 miles

I think it would be the noise rather than the smoke that got me, partly because of the noise but partly because you wouldn't be able to see any wildlife. But the smoke is a close second.
