Personally I refuse to make traditional things to use in association with modern things. I would recommend removing the flowers and call it a basket. That would make it even better!

I know what you mean, but glass and daffodils have been around long enough for me. Great birch work. must have a go as I love baskets. Anyone ever tried a larger, bowl style?

well i made the basket and then realised afterwards that it could be used for this, so i'll call it a basket with many uses

I have never made a round birch basket before. How would you get it round?

nice work, jon r. did you use bark from dead trees for your work? I'll have to find some, and try to make a knife sheath.

yep, i used dead bark. The bark i used to make this would have been too far gone to make a sheath i think

Excellent work Did you make it free hand or use some sort of molde to keep the shape when doing it?

it was totally freehand and i just used a few pegs to hold it together whilst i made it

Yeah, nice one jon! There's been some great basketry on here recently, it's something I really feel I should learn...

I've had a go, based on the examples on the forum using strips of cartridge paper, to try and get the feel for the shapes and construction (also makes for an office friendly lunch time pastime) Hoping to have a go with bark over the weekend.
