Ok so i went ahead and bought a mountain bike from a catalog........
Silly me, big mistake and never again.

Within the first 4 miles it had threaded the bottom bracket (crank bearing caps)
and is now un ride-able.
Im sending it back and not getting another as i want reliability to do bikepacking.

I joined the Bear Bones bike packing forum so i can learn about the kit and bike bits needed and so i can ask questions when things go wrong.
When i posted up about my dilemma and obvious disappointment they did what i never thought would happen to me.......

They are all clubbing together unused spare parts and building me a bike.!!!

I am in total shock that a group of people would all come together like this for a new member (14 posts in)

I really dont know what to do at the moment, im in shock.

This has for the now restored a little faith in the human race.
I have seen it happen on here and other forums when people are robbed or have house fires etc.
But to happen to me.......i didnt think it was possible.

Great to hear about mate always amazes me the kindness that people can show to a total stranger. Maybe there's hope yet :).

Very cool, I am sure that will be a very special bike as those of us who love cycling are as obsessive as any hobbyists out there for the right kit and parts for the ride, we take components off our bikes when upgrading it is never substandard or we would not have bought it in the first place, we take very good components off to replace with great components and those with great components replace them with great components that are super light, so i am sure specialists on a forum like that will make my spare parts box look like an exclusive bike shop stock list. Bike packing is awesome.

Please do not forgot to show us when it arrives.

I'd have great sentimental attachment to something i acquired in that fashion

How fantastic is that, as said please take some pics, be great to see the bike when it's all together.

It's always tough recommending cheaper bikes for off-road use.
On1 hand if someone is new to the hobby you don't want to advise them to spend too much in case they don't like it.
On the other hand though the components do really NEED to be of a certain standard for hard off-road use, which inevitably costs.

Having the sort of experience on that forum, help and advice is worth more than even the best kit though.

Well done you lucky bugger :lmao:

Well the final pieces arrived today, and i spent the afternoon assembling my bike.
I still cannot believe i got it mostly for free, including some nice bags for the frame, seat and top bar.

Cost me £35 total for a chain, new gear/brake cables, new inner tubes and a rear brake mech.
Bike is worth around £800 if i had bought it in new parts!!!!!

Looks proper solid too you scored big time there, i love a good hardtail, i've got 2 full suspension bikes but nothing beats the feeling of total control and the transfer of your power through the pedals like a hardtail, got 2 of those too, my full suspension bikes are forever needing maintenance but the hardtails are hardcore and basically need cleaned and oiled and a year maintenance, full sus is a bi monthly maintenance and bloody expensive to replace any part especially anything to do with the rear suspension, welcome to the bikepacking lifestyle

You jammy bugger that looks fantastic.

What brakes are those, can't see a hydraulic like are they cable operated?
Can't see a back brake calliper or disc either?

They have done well for you. I bet you are over the moon with this generosity. Bike people on forums can be real generous at times and true bike people have way too much kit around getting in the way of getting more kit. Think you could have done them a favour by giving them a good reason to get rid of some of their box of tricks.

I would put money on some of the generous people using this as an excuse to replace the widget with a new one even better and more expensive. I mean you have helped them make some room and as gear freaks know you have to fill empty space with more gear, unless married of course. I went from kit in every room in the house to just a couple of sheds after I got a cohabitor moving in.
