Better Kit organisation

I have so much stuff.

So I am trying to limit it to what I will use. Even if it means doubling up.

So, I have two kitchen boxes. One two man and one for one.

And I am sorting out a day bag and a bag for the car.

Anything surplus to that, bar

a; Consumables
b; Specialised
c; Personal

Will be got rid of.

Does this make sense?

Depends very much how you see your future.
I almost got rid of my Atlantis3 tent because I was perfectly happy with my tipi.
Now that one of my three year old grandchildren has taken to real camping. My daughter has always loved it. So while I have not given my Atlantis away it gets used a lot. This also means that the Base Camp Kelly Kettle now gets used again. I have been enjoying the little Trekker while on my own.

Yes it makes sense if it makes sense to you.

I try and store what I have in the storage boxes, and take what I need depending on my plans and company.

As much as I try and offload what I don't use or get along with I do have redundancies and spares and just in case items.

What I take out in the summer may differ to winter in terms of cookset and sleep system/shelter

I would like to get to the point where I have a bag that covers everything I need and use, but I currently enjoy trying out different things so my kit is rotated on pretty much each venture out, depending on if its a day out/hike/camp.

The rule of thumb is that you will need it three weeks after getting rid of it

The timescale is extended for seasonal kit obviously.

Seriously, the need to clear things out really depends on how much sensible storage space you've got that allows you to keep it without it getting in the way.

I have ten sleeping bags; all respectable. The worst is my standard MOD summer bag.

I hate sleeping bags; very seldom do I ever use one.

Definitely makes sense, being doing the same for a while. We can only use so much and we have our favourites. Just resist the buying. If you haven’t used in a while. Get rid, you will probably miss it but never use.

Yeah, I really can. Nature abhors a vacuum, and apparently so does human nature. Add in Murphy's Law that means anything you do get rid of after years of neglect will inevitably be exactly what's required within a week or two, and you can easily end up stymied by your own belongings. I'd love to offer the solution, but looking around me...? Nope, no answers here.

That’s my problem, surplus was stored at my mother’s (who had her own issues with too much stored stuff), sadly she passed away recently so I’ve got to consolidate it all, plus family stuff I want to keep. I find those big plastic boxes with lids, occasionally available in Aldi, are great for organising, plus they will stack. I have one full of mess kits, one with canvas palatkas etc. etc.

I regret getting rid of my 70's Karrimor aluminium pack frames, I had two. They were so versatile, and would be great for lugging stuff around the wood now. I should never have dumped my Vango Force Ten just 'cos it was 'tired' . I regret losing the odd bit of kit such as a WWII issue penknife .
