I think a lot of people will say a Mora, and to be honest I cannot disagree. There are a large and varied range of these knives with prices form £10 to £50ish. I also like the Condor range and they have basic but good knives ranging from £25 to £50 - they are never going to win any beauty awards but are very functional - Shop around I have see great varation in prices for the same knives. Thats my tuppence worth I am sure others will give you some more ideas.

I've just bought my brother a Hultafors Heavy Duty Knife as his first bushcraft knife.
I'd heard loads about how tough they were, but when it arrived, I was still I was surprised by how good it was.
If you like wooden scales and a more traditional look (leather sheath etc.) I'd recommend the Condor Bushlore.
