I found out a lovely old double-edged billhook in the shed last week, that belonged to my great, great grandfather so its got to be 100 years old or more and I thought it would be nice to restore it to its former glory and get using it again.

I would like to know what the best grind would be for each edge - there's the hook side and the other edge is approx 4 or 5" straight edge.

Cheers

All the bill hooks i own have a convex edge.I s'pose that has come about by sharpening in the woods with those cigar shaped stones...
Not saying its the best grind, just a grind.

Any chance of a pic?I likee old tools!

convex is the right grind ;) It's tough and yet sharp, just like a billhook should be :D The flatness of teh convexity will depend on what you use it for and how you like it yourself.

When I make or refurbish hooks for people I put a fairly shallow convexity on so that if it rolls easily in use the owner can then gradually round it further (much easier than the otherway around)
