Hi,

Is there anyone here familiar with Bergans of Norway, and more specifically their older external frame backpacks? I've been made aware of, and seen a photo of a small children's sized external frame backpack made by Bergans, but my researching on google has so far proved fruitless. I would love one for my son.

Thanks.

I have (had) several, including a small one with frame. Which I would not recommend for children.
I think they might be a lot less comfortable, due to shape and weight, on their backs then on an adult's. And even for those these framed backpacks are hit or miss.
I use none of my Bergans, actually. Have one of the very first batches from the early 30's.
I use an older Haglöfs as a daypack, which has a slightly different form, that feels better for me.

Thank you, I guess it's partly the novelty of owning one myself, too.

I did source a child's Bergams of Norway external frame backpack but had to go for a lay down after he told me the price he was looking for it, $500!

I have been looking at Osprey backpacks, I really like the look of the Osprey Jet 18 which Osprey recommend for ages 8+ so might be too big for my 5 year old. They do a Tempest Jr which is recommended for 6+ but it done up via zips whereas the Jet is a bucket style with top flap, which I much prefer.

A 5 year old?
Make him/her carry their own lunch, nothing more then that. They wear out faster then you might expect and they will outgrow any backpack you get them.
So I would stick to a simple, cheap rucksack from a thriftshop or something like that and maybe a small canteen. Make the bigger investments later in life if they're still interested.

I don't mind spending the money, The Osprey Jet 18 is currently down to like £50 and will last him for possibly the next 10 years.

I don't necessarily need him to start carrying his own kit, but I think he might like it. At 3 he was walking up and down hill of 1000m altitude and at 4 he was walking up and down Pen Y Fan.
