I understand what a bergan is, I think, but I have always wondered where the term came from? Does anyone know???

Yup,

Bergan is just a rucksack. The firm Bergan used to make forces rucksacks and the term stuck (like hoover for vacuum cleaner)

Bergans of Norway, was named after Ole F. Bergan, the inventor and owner of the patient for the frame rucksack. He started making them sometime back in 1908

Bergen is Old High German for ‘protect (shelter) or cover’
