BBC's Masterclass series on Youtube

One of the motivating factors for me getting back into this Bushcraft thing was seeing Monty Don's first episode of Masterclass about Green woodworking on TV a few years ago.

I taped the entire series (Thatching, Stonemason, Weaving, Blacksmithing, Stained glass window making) on VHS but always wished I could have had it on DVD, having heaved the VHS player at the tip when it broke. So now I can, of sorts, by watching the series again on line.

Here's the link to the youtube page

I just wish they hadn't made it so like a reality TV show or so competitive, but that seems to be the trend nowadays.

Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks Aaron have been wanting to re-watch this for ages! really enjoyed the blacksmithing episode. wish they had done more for leatherworking

Yeah I agree, a leatherworking episode would have been interesting to say the least... but perhaps not everyone was willing to sell their soul to Beelzebub to acquire those skills. :lmao:

I wish I didn't see fall-in-able links like this when the suns out and I'm supposed to be digging over the garden ;) Thank you, I'll watch some of a cold blustery evening and keep on working now like an industrious little wifey :)

Great idea for a series - just a shame they used Monty Don - terrible presenter :(

Just goes to show that there is still scope for a new Bushcraft television series focusing on all the skills and knowledge which can be supplemented by experience and further specialist tuition.
Don't get me started Red. Remember Kevin McCloud lol.

He's wonderful! Gotta have some smiley hunky chappies to give us wimmin reason to watch telly :)

Sal, step away from the keyboard and get back out in the garden! :)

It's that series that started my partner and I into stained glass. Sophie, the tutor in the series now a very good friend. Good series all the way through.

Wow, that's great to read. That's got to be a satisfying hobby. Like I said above it was the green woodworking episode that fired me up and I eventually found BCUK as a result of some internet searches. Best thing I ever did when I typed "Pole lathe" in Google. I just love this place and the people here are top peeps... I have yet to make that pole lathe. too distracted by other projects I see done on the forums here.

I enjoyed the series, but the one I liked the least was the thatching one. As I recall there was a woman in that episode that didn't spend as much time listening to advice as she should have, knowing a little bit of knowledge suddenly made her an expert. I'd like to have seen a follow up on this series of how those that took part got on with their careers.

As for the remarks about Monty Don presenting skills, he did come across as a bloke you can chat with without the fear of treading all over his fragile ego. At the risk of offending Sally and her lustful thoughts for Kevin McCloud, I'm not that impressed with him I have to say. He's just a bit too smarmy, but that's just my opinion. At least the Masterclass series didn't have someone like Ant & Dec present it, imagine what a farce that would have turned into!

Offense? Moi?! Quelle horreur ;)

TBF I spent so much time drooling, I didn't actually take much in apart from making a surprisingly effective glue out of wee and rabbit skin so I'm willing to admit your points may well be valid ;)

Nice one biker. I never saw a couple of those.

The blacksmithing one was good. I was surprised the woman didn't win it. I googled them all a while back, it doesn't look like any of the smiths made a business of it. The only one I could find was the Londoner and that was just a reference to him using some swimming pool.

I know one of the wood workers made a go of it but his website hasn't been updated in a long while.

I think the thatching woman runs a green housing type thing though!
