Hello all,
I am in the process of designing a sheath that will allow belt and neck carry. I expect to use a diagonal strap/cord across the opposite shoulder to tuck it under my arm. Is that what you call 'Baldrick Style'?

What features do you need to add to your sheath design to best allow this?Pictures greatly appreciated.

Thanks Red.
Looks like I'll be doing something similar for my axe once I've got this one finished!
If I incorporate a similar design on a knife sheath it should sit almost horizontal under my arm.

This is what I did to a standard Woodlore sheath

The hardest part was figuring out how to join the shoulder strap to the sheath. I ended up putting 4 turks head knots on the sheath and weaving the laces through on the same colour. It's actually really difficult to see any joins.

That's lovely work. Where do you learn to weave like that and what's the material?

I suppose you can adjust your attachments to the sheath to get it to sit at more of an angle?

Very nice Buckshot. I have an adjustable length version also done in kangaroo in an article I have over at JM's.

The knife I braided this for has 2 holes in the sheath that I can thread the cord though, but a standard belt loop would also allow this sort of baldric to work. The turk's head weave is a nice and classy attachment.

I have also done a wider shoulder strap version but have not put up the tutorial for that one yet. The 8-plait and 12-plait are compared here:

This also allows me to easily remove the baldric and use a short braid loop as a dangler for this knife. (Of course, I have not braided the dangler loop yet :lmao: ).

Well it looks like you turned inspiration into a fine piece of work. I like the 3 color braid, and your sheath join is original and classy.

Edit:
After reviewing the tutorials I REALLY like the little tail you left as a belt tuck in...the thing I hate the most about neck sheaths or baldrics is their tendency to swing out as you work. This is a great idea....which I am promptly going to steal :You_Rock_

On my sheath I intended to remove the baldric and replace with a dangler loop for belt carry. Now I think I am going to figure out a way to make the dangler loop be my belt tuck in tail (somehow).

I have done some two color braid (black and tan) and found my work muddied up as I had not let my lace dry after greasing. Morgan recommends talc as a braid lube for hat bands and the like where you do not want to stain the hat, but I do not think he said anything about just letting the grease cure a bit for two or three color work.

You really did a bang up job on those tutorials.

Mark,

I did not have time yesterday to look at your tutorials....really excellent. Do you mind if I link them to my article over at JM's?

I have never made a Grant weave stick like you did for the turk's head. I now think I may just have to do that makes for a much easier weave as I see it now.

On my dog bone awl sheath I used turk's head cover knots and just wimped out on the tutorial bit....your work is not only clear but makes a set of beautiful knots too. I always tie turk's heads on my fingers and could not take a set of photos without it looking like I needed 2 more hands :D

I'm glad I could repay the compliment.
The tail really helps to hold the sheath in place and the turks heads give it just enough of a lip to catch on the bottom edge of the belt rather than just sliding back out.
I found waiting a couple of days for the braiding soap to dry really helped the laces stay the correct colour.

Please link away ;)
I found that weave stick and the different way of tying the turks head really helpfull
I considered including the knot tutorial in the main braiding one but it's really too big and deserves one all it's own.

Thanks for the compliments :You_Rock_

Buckshot....I have linked the articles to my dog bone awl and baldric tutorials. Thanks. I am certain that there will be some sporty new braids hanging on someones shoulders soon.

I could not make the links in this thread open, but a look around in the DIY area of the articles found them.
