I was in my local offlicence the other day and the range of Rum they had was pretty impressive considering it isnt that popular here.

At the moment I usually opt for Mayers as I like the taste and its cheap as chips (About 4.50 for a 1L bottle) I did spy some Spiced Rum from Cpt. Morgan, has anyone tried this?

Can anyone reccomend a good rum for drinking straight? I will drink it neat on hikes last thing before bed to offset the coffee ;) But in the comfort of my own home I usually mix it with fresh orange juice and soda water (got to be careful here, its easy to drink about 1/3 a bottle without reaslizing it  )

So, any suggestions for a good tasty (dark) rum?

I see Bikething beat me to it with the Woods! :p

Appletons also make a good range, from very light to proper 100% Grog, but you usually only see the lighter stuff in the shops (for obvious reasons!)

It is also worth pointing out that Genuine 100% proof is MEANT to be mixed with water, it can put you in hospital or kill, if drunk neat!

woods 100 ;)

Ah, woods :) my weapon of choice as a student.

We used to think the official slogan should have been
"Woods 100. It makes you cough."

As far as good sipping rum, I like Havana Club 3yo. It also makes a mean mojito!

Thanks guys, I was given some overproof (57)* Bundaberg rum and it was just too strong for anything. I used to drink scotch neat with no ice but this was just too much.

I can get the Havana here I think, I might give that a try and ask my dad to bring something from the UK when he visits.

*I did the Bundaberg distillery tour in 01, the whole of Queensland smells like sugar and when you get into the distillery they have this vat that must be 50' across full of moalsses and other stuff, oddly there isnt a single fly to be seen, which is odd as you would imagine it would be a magnet to them.

I could have spent all day there just breathing heavily ;)

Hicks is agood one.

Just for the record 100 (degree) proof is 50% ethanol not 100%. You'll not rum at 100% as that is pure ethanol not a spirit - there would be no secondary ingrediants in it. Most drinks now state XX% rather than proof.

Any Navy spirit (Navy Gin is a habit of mine) is over proof ie great than 100 proof or 50% as at this amount of alcohol the old black powder would still ignite if the spirit was spilled on it.

Rummmmmm. Now we're talking my language! *LOL*

I'd go with the Appletons, Pussers, or the Woods 100.
Capt Morgan isn't worth the bottle.

I managed to visit the Appletons Distillery a few years back :) :) :) Some of the stuff they let you try there would be illegal to sell I think ! Appletons cures all ills. Well, nothing seems to bother you if you drink enough...
