Today in Birmingham a man had to be freed by West Midlands firefighters after having his head cemented inside a microwave oven with Polyfilla....

I guess be thankful it was his own head, and not someone else's.

They should have left him to sweat it out for a few days while attending genuine fire and rescue ops. And then left him a bit longer, while attending more genuine fire and rescue ops, then taken the weekend off, took the kids to school on Monday, remembered there's some idiot who cemented his head in a microwave. And then sat down for a coffee and a bit of banter with the lads at the station. It beggars belief, they should have put a hearing tube in along with the breathing tube so people could come and visit to tell him just how stupid he is while laughing at him crashing into the furniture and door frames wearing a cemented microwave on his head. Oh my dear taxes, just where do you go...

Or he could go out paddling in a sea kayak for a true Sopranos prank moment.:joyful:

Please review the last few years of good sports who have taken themselves out of the gene pool and garnered a Darwin Award for the effort.
Few live to wear the prize. Shooting yourself in the crotch with a .357mag pistol puts you in the front row.
The electrified beef heart story comes to mind.

My father and I almost got a Darwin award. We were at the camp doing a reno project and were smoking when we went to refuel the generator to run some power tools.
Just as we were about to uncap the generator and the gas can, I mentioned perhaps we should finish our cigarettes before continuing. That was embarrassing.
Not quite like gluing your head in a microwave oven though. That takes a deliberate kind of stupid.

Apparently petrol being poured on a lit but going nowhere garden fire isn't a good idea. It was fun watching my dad jumping back from a growing fireball though. He didn't need his eyebrows trimming at the barbershop they were singed to a good length.

BTW escaping fire is one way to get someone to move quickly. A badly operated stump grinder is another but best not mention that. It was not an inheritance attempt! And I was in control, I mean my friend was.

I think we've all done thoughtless and stupid things but this? Head in microwave oven then pour in concrete, then wait while it sets? Seriously!?! What was he thinking?

So I take it the extraction technique wasn't sledgehammers to the concrete until head caved in?

How did they think this would end up? If I was the fire brigade I would have given him a sheet of wet and dry and told him to sand himself free. Then tell him he has 2 days after which we were going to turn the microwave on.

I must say I have pretty much lost count of the number of times I could have killed myself. From handbrake turning in a carpark beside a loch cos it was icy.. very, very icy! to climbing huge oak trees, crossing a bridge over the River Clyde via railway tracks (Glasgow to London line) messing with live ammunition, petrol bombs, rather large bonfires, investigating (via climbing) derelict house and castles, rafting down some rapids on the clyde, shooting homemade arrows at each other and accidentally heading a bit of breeze block thinking it was a bit of sponge.... I would call it active learning :) Admittedly all before I was 22 though!

Young, dumb and full of polyfilla?? Not defending the guy, he was a muppet but the but for the grace of Fozzie....

I hope the emergency services charged him for wasting their time and our money. However, it did provide a training exercise and an opportunity to add to the list of situations to prepare for. But there is no chance they will ever be able to forecast the imaginative extent of human stupidity. Hence the cliche, "Whatever next?".

I'm not going to embarrass myself by owning up to some of the stupid things I have done over the years, but none of them were deliberate or merely to draw attention to myself.

Wow that's crazy. I went to art college and was told about the exothermic reaction of plaster of paris [they even went into the chemistry of it, now long forgotten] . She most definitely should have been told this by the tutors! I'm amazed she wasn't under close enough supervision to stop her putting her hands in there in the first place. Even more mind boggling seeing as it happened before but to a lesser extent with a previous student!

I remember doing acid etching, soldering, re-wiring plugs and a little light welding at secondary school as part of compulsory CDT. Always under strict supervision - I don't suppose your allowed to learn this stuff at school anymore...
