Hi guys,

I've just got out of hospital having spent a few days in there. I've been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after having nearly been in a coma with it.

If any of you have it, just wondering if you can offer any general advice based on your experiences of it.... my blood sugars are still high and struggling to get them under control... it's affecting my eyesight atm, currently sat here with very blurred vision which i can't seem to shift .... early days though...

Any advice/experiences would be appreciated.

I have type 2...Change in Diet and eating habits has vastly improved mine.

A side benefit is that I have lost weight (bonus), and I'm no longer looking for the quick fix in food.

resign yourself to the fact this is a condition you are going to have to live with for the rest of your time,
change your diet to smooth out your sugar input , which will help you manage your insulin inputs,
the important thing is to tell your friends , and teach them the tell tale signs of when things are not quite right so they can help you, because if you get slightly out of balance you will not be aware of them. The most important thing is to carry on and lead a normal full life!

Sorry to hear that, Mark. I do hope you'll be ok.

As said, it might require a snall lifestyle adjustment, biut now that you know about it you can keep it in check.

Harvestman I have type2 and that can go undiagnosed for years. I've only ever had to have 4 insulin shots when I've been on a binge, otherwise its all diet controlled.

Yep, type 1 here too mark

I was same as you. Went to hospital only when it got to the point of falling down and not being able see

don't worry about really mate, in a few months it will just be sommat else on your daily schedule
Your blood suger will be an absolute nightmare to control at first so don't beat yourself up over it. Just let it come gradually

Mind the carbs you eat too mate. A portion of fish and chips will raise your blood suger as much as two or three mars bars
Fruit is another one to watch
Your diet will be a bit crap for a few weeks but once you learn how to drive it it ain't so bad at all

For my type 2 I got Metformin which works well for me. If I eat too much, I have a shot and it does the job, but like I say, mine is now diet controlled and I've not had to have any in around 8 months or so (during which I've lost 30lbs due to the diet change).

Cheers guys :)

My diet's not a problem... i eat healthy and train anyway... Most of my carbs come from things like porridge, brown rice, wholewheat bread and pasta and potatoes... i don't eat chips.or much fried stuff. Only ever really had sugar in tea and coffee, changed to sweeteners now. Not so keen on the taste but i'll get used to it.

They gave me Lantus, and NovoRapid insulin Adam.

I feel ok, just my eyes that are doing my nut in... vision swims in and out of focus all the time, but my sugars are still in the 15 to 20 range atm. (45 when admitted with 4 ketones) I was a couple of days from being a coma.... had acidosis too. Lost 4 1/2 stone over a 3 to 4 month period, but i was trying to lose weight so just though the diet and training was working well and i had quit drinking and smoking (cold turkey) just before xmas so i attributed feeling funny to withdrawal symptoms. Wasn't sleeping, drinking 10+ litres of fluids a day, getting cramps in my legs etc.
It all went a bit pete tong :D

+1 what tankie said. Having your sugar swing about wildly will give you pretty significant problems down the road use diet to control it as much as possible (hard in the early days) and jab when you need to. It'll take a bit of time but you will just learn to manage it and continue having a very nice life!

Cheers

The vision thing is just suger build up in your blood (as I'm sure you know) it will just fade away in a week or so

The carbs in bread, rice and pasta will still get you....I only mention it cos it was sommat that caught me out at first

Mine came on when I had flu. Was drinking lucazde and all sorts lol.....when I finally went to hospital after having a stand up row with the doctor because I insisted on riding my bike home
he actually called the police on me. Copper turned up after i'd been home about ten minutes. I told him there was no way I was gonna leave my bike in a doctors car park for days on end....he just shook his head while saying 'bikers' and walked off :lmao:

Anyways, when I finally got there I was off the scale on there machines and +6 ketones, oh and I had thrush in my mouth too, that was the worst bit LMAO (done me best to make you laugh there)

You might feel ****e now mate but you will hardly notice it in six months.....just crack on

Oh aye, if they have given you flex pens tell em you want some proper ones next time, flex pens are rubbish
