Any good for a bushcraft beginner? (Me)

Hi,

I have a few knives, mostly showy, expensive stuff that I don't really fancy chucking about too much, although I do have an old, but reliable Normark fixed blade that I use for hunting.

I dont have a photo, but its very similar to the middle one in this picture..

http://www.jbrucevoyles.com/Auction 26/DCP_3785.jpg

It's Fiskars stainless steel, it appears to be very thick/strong, and on the brass at the top of the handle it it stamped 1967. Not sure if this is the actual date of manufacture, although I'd guess so as it's been around for some time, and proved a trusty blade for a few hunters, my father included. It does differ slightly from the one in the picture in that the sheath is leather, and the the handle is like a glossy bakerlite type material.

Would it be any good for bushcraft? OR should I leave it for hunting?

Feel free to call it a bag of sh*te if that's what it is ha ha, it just means I'll have to wait a couple of days til I have some money to order a Frosts Mora (from what I've read on here). Money is tight, so I'm just trying to keep costs down if possible :)

Thanks in advance for your help fellas, been getting some great info off this forum, really glad I found it.

That looks like a good knife to go bushcrafting with. Maybe even better then Frost mora.

I think Frost Moras are recomended because they are cheap and they cut. Sometimes better then knifes 10 times the price.

So if money is tight, just use it. If you then decide to get the mora then you would know why this or that knife is better.

have fun

it certainly looks a good strong knife. as it has been around a bit it sounds as thought it will take a bashing and last. the 3 most important things for me in a knife are, in no particukar order: easy to sharpen when out and about, will work well with a fire steel and is good for batoning. use what you feel comfortable with, but if you decide to go for a mora, they are a good knife for the price, and will do all 3 of the above.

good luck...stu

Hi,
Actually the Normark knife looks very good, ideal if you do some hunting as well as bushcraft. Are they available in the U.K. and if so, where?

Thanks a million lads, I think I'll definately give the old girl a spin out. It's served me well, and my father too, so it seems only right to give it a go :)

I'm sure it will be excellent for batoning as it's built like a brick outhouse.

Thanks again :D :D

There's only one way to find out! Give it a thorough work out.
If it breaks, you can at least say that you pushed it to it's limit.

As mentioned before, where abouts are the available from?

Pete. :)

I'm not sure, I know they used to be, I saw quite a few about when I was younger, but don't tend to see this style much any more, as I say, this one is a 1967 knife that was used by my father before me.

Ah, mr Snock, how are you? (I'm aston_shooter on the BBS).

As I say, I havent seen these knives about really since I was younger, they seemed to fade away about 10 years ago, I had a really nice Normark folder but it vanished

I have seen a few since, but they've always tended to be filleting blades, usually with a lower quality handle.

When I sort a camera out I'll take a photo of my exact knife, it looks a little classier, albeit more worn than the one in the picture I found. Mine also has a nice leather sheath.

Hi,
I've done a little research and it appears that the Normark knife pictured was imported by Whitby and Co.
However they no longer show it on their site and I can find no reference to it elsewhere - a pity.

Who knows
i have just been given the exact knife you are talking about by my dads mate, he said that it is a great knife and it might even replace my clipper
the only thing it is missing is the brass end cap

mine takes some real abuse and just asks for more :)

One of the best 10-quid's I've ever spent. I've done everything from cutting carpets, hollowing out pumpkins, filleting trout and general wood/camp tasks. Never had to sharpen it yet and it's still going strong.
