When I came out, holding down a job was also an issue for the first 18 months. I found civvy st jobs and fellow employees not having the same standards that I had and was used to. The only steadfast was security work and the likeminded ex mil individuals; the brotherhood, team mentality is a huge part of it. I've slowly adjusted, but found maintaining time for 'team' activity via the Coastguard and Mountain Rescue fills that hole. Looking at going back to the reservists which keeps that flame burning may help your oppo adjust from being a regular? It definitely works for most ex regs I know...
