You're flogging a dead horse dude. If it worked then, it works now. No one is claiming its a long term fix. Only that it is an effective preventative for infection in the shorter term. No amount of google fu will suggest otherwise.

Is it ok to use on deceased equines then?

Yes. Iodine is used to sterilize intact skin in preparation for surgery.

I see what you mean, yes I think you’re right there.

Apparently 1% iodine solution can be used for irrigating high risk wounds (animal bites, open fractures) but it seems for the cleaning of wounds now they suggest saline, or even tap water for irrigation.

In terms of bushcraft/survival, I’d probably still use it in the field if not somewhere that I had access to sterile water for immediate irrigation, in order to reduce the risk of a life threatening infection until I could have it cleaned properly.

The thead was started asking whether it's worth buying iodine. The answer is clearly not.

Iodine works fine, used on coral scrapes and all sorts. Seen it used on non-venomous snake bites too.
For some reason it seems to be restricted from sale in the UK except as tablets. A while back I wanted to get some for a Canadian trip, had to settle for surgical steriliser - the sort that they put on before opening you up. I think in future I'll buy it in country.
This stuff?

A bottle last ages, I still have one somewhere in a FAK.

Yes, that would do, 30cc would be ok for 1st aid oops, but at the time I wanted a bit more to be able to flush out a decent size wound. I was going to be a long way from anywhere with a foreseable risk of nasty dirty injuries. In the event I was proved right about the risk and therefore changed my plans somewhat.

Not sure I’d be using it on a bigger wound. We used it in the tropics for the already mentioned coral or rock scratches, a cut foot from a broken glass on the beach etc. Also the idiots who hired scooters and raced around on sandy roads wearing just shorts got some nasty infections after sliding down the road on their skin. As a daily disinfectant it’s effective, but I’d use saline even if I had to boil and salt my own water for wound cleaning.
