Years ago I had a rescue dog, Lady, who learned how to do that all by herself -- on the barbed wire at the top of the fence around our plot on the industrial estate. She sat there in exactly the same way that the dog in that clip sat, but a heck of a lot steadier, like she was a bird. Astonishing. That clip is the only other dog I've seen do such a thing.
She'd look at me from up there on the fence, on the other side of the plot, as if daring me to try to catch her. But if I took a step towards her she'd jump down outside and be gone for a day or two.
Watching how she got up there was an education, she'd go to a corner where two sides of the fence meet and run up one of the 45-degree concrete brace posts to get started. Near the top she'd skip from side to side and finally leap from one side to the top of the three strands of barbed wire on the other side. Utterly amazing. Several people saw her do it, including the night security guard next door who came round to tell me about it. He'd thought he wouldn't be believed, but he was. That wasn't Lady's only amazing skill, the way she handled our other rescue dog, almost twice her size, was literally stunning. She'd stand in front of a brick wall and agg him on until he charged at her full tilt. At the very last second before he ploughed into her she'd lightly skip to one side and look over her shoulder to watch him plough head first into a brick wall instead. He'd get up looking a bit stunned but it never seemed to slow him down much. I wish I'd made recordings of some of her antics but the only photograph I have of her is when she got on top of a caravan one day. I haven't even been able to find that for some years. Sadly too late for photographs now, just a few fond memories.
