Just out of interest, someone told me that anyone owning an air rifle must now have a secure cabinet in which to store it. However, I've looked at the BASC website and all I can find it that you have to take reasonable precautions to prevent the rifle getting into the hands of anyone under 18.

No-one under the age of 18 has set foot in my house for about three years, so if I got myself an air rifle, would I need to get a cabinet/safe for it, or could I just store it in the loft, or in the cupboard under the stairs, for example?

loft or under stairs is fine and perfectly legal. If your worried get a trigger lock.
