ok after talking to stuart and cindy from kellam knives on the weekend and hearing about
one of you that cut himself at the nec the other week i got thinking
how easy it is to get hurt with the tools we all use so how many of us have had a bad injury with a knife or axe
i will start two years ago i was useing an axe when i was tired and
should not have been and it bounced of a knot in the top of the kindling i was chopping and into my finger ending up giving me 6 stitches so anyone else done anything

About a year ago I was cuttng wood at homw with an axe and I was (for some reason) waering safety specs ... well, the safety specs fell off and grazed my eye on their travels. I snapped my left hand up and caught it on the axe. Left me with a cut about an inch long above the forefinger knuckle on the left hand that went down tot he moving parts!

Taught me a lot!

I was chopping wood a few years ago and the axe head came straight off the shaft and hit me. Thats why im scared of wooden axes!

I have only been bit three times, *frantically clutching a bit of wood for luck* and only on the hands.

I have a very faint scar on my left thumb from when I slipped when cutting towards myself :roll: with a pocket knife as a kid.

I have a slightly fresher scar on the pad of my right middle finger from being attacked by a vicious letter box :shock: while delivering newspapers.

The freshest scar is on the palm of my left hand from when I got it caught on the protruding jaw of a 3-jaw chuck on a metal-work lathe.

Dunno how I have avoided anything worse, considering how much I play with sharp stuff. Dumb luck is great stuff :-D

On a hunting & butchering course a year ago I got bitten and got 4 stitches in the index finger. And I recently took off almost the entire top of my thumb while I was finishing a custom knife. 4 stitches. You always get hurt by the ones you love eh? :-?

I've cut myself loads of times - always on my hands and always due to being a bit careless/stupid.

The most recent was with my favourite little mora when my hand choked up on the blade (very easy to do with this knife) and slit my right index finger by the middle joint. Nothing major but stopped me doing any more carving for a few days as I kept pushing the wood with the cut.

The worst was when I stabbed almost the identical place on my left index finger. I think scar tissue is stopping some of the nerves working properly as I don't have proper feeling down the side of my finger anymore! It's very strange.

I've had the occasional bouncing saw that's grazed my hand but nothing with an axe so far.

One more...i was in the forest and wiping mud off my WS, i was rubbing it with my little finger when it slipped and rubbed the edge. It was hurting but the worst was the blood everywhere!

my knife related injury's are different,

i have never cut myself with my knife,

however several times i have slipped, and cut, grazed or stung myself due to trying to reach stuff or climb stuff to cut.

my worst out door injuries have been:

slipping on a minibus step and shinning myself(after the walk :roll: ).

an ice axe arrest (without gloves ) i completely skinned two knuckles \: at the time the mountain leader said i would need stitches (it happened febuary, it's only just healed), worth it for the "ICE AXE" scars though

and washing up a mini trangia pan grip, had a sharp edge and cut my hand!

no knife injuries apart from blisters !

I have been lucky enough so far to have never cut myself with a knife

I have a crescent scar on my right hand from trying to clear a blockage on a L98 A1 rifle with my thumb (STUPID ) which ended up getting caught in the breech as the bolt slid forward

And a have a scar in front of my thumb on my left hand where a large laboratory glass gas syringe shattered in my hand whilst i was depressing the plunger and a 3" shard of glass went into my hand

Discussions involving the comparing of scars and injuries are always so popular :-D

What is it about scars that make them such a talking point ??? :?:

... I got a few good ones - a inch and a half one that spirals a third of the way around my left index finger (a broken measuring burette), another incher above the knuckle from my axe-ident. Oh, yes, add to that where I took a hunk off of the end of that finger as a kid taking leaves off rhubarb!

On the right hand I have a small scar on both the top and bottom on the first joint of the index finger from where I was bitten by a rat as a youngster too ...

Many more but those are the best!

I could mention the scar I got when I sat on a chair that had an engineers needle file left laying on the seat. I got 3 days in hospital and an itty bitty scar that I can't quite get to see!

Usual knife scars and grazed knee perma-scars too.

As I type I've got a plaster on my finger where my Helle bit me last night as punishment for buying the Woodlore, didn't know knives could get jealous!

I currently have a gash across my middle finger, where my SAK closed on it yesterday while trying to remove a cable tye from a pair of bino's (Jamie :evil: ) The blade was sharp so i'll test the theory that sharp knife wounds heal quicker.
I'm still covered in cuts and bruises from a recent mountain bike crash.
I went straight over the handlebars going as fast as i could in top gear.
Fortunately i had my helmet on, as this took the initial impact, shortly followed by my face! Removing the skin entirely from oneside as i slid along on the gravel, then the bike landed on me and a friend ran me over.... My knee is the slowest bit to heal, as it has to keep moving i guess.
I have a liitle scar on the back of my hand from where i missed cutting kindleing with an axe as a kid. It cut right through to the bone. no stitches and only a little scar left
I think that'll do for the moment :-D

I had a very close call with a katana. It was a few years ago when I bought it. Katana's slide easily in and out of thier scabbards - it's supposed to be like that for quick access. I was holding the sword in my left hand and tipped the handle forward, the katana slid gracefully away from me, out of it's scabbard towards the floor. My instinct was to grab my expensive blade - but some other, more primitive instinct kicked in, I realised my fingers were worth more than the blade and I stopped myself, allowing the katana to hit the (carpeted) floor. I shudder to think what would have happened if I'd grabbed that sliding blade.

i must be the odd one out then, even my scars have scars!

one of the silliest ones was done cutting a large branch with a razer sharp fiskars hatchet. i had to have my feet wide apart in a half squat to get to the tree in question, i thght just a few more chops would do it, the axe went straight through the branch and carried on towards my foot before i regained control. a while later two things became apparent, my laces had come undone, and i must have stepped in a puddle as my foot felt wet.

closer examination showed perfectly guillotined laces and a small slit through the top of my shoe, sock and foot :yikes:

Combine the two and you get my worst accident. Getting my head slammed in the door of a minibus just after coming off the L98 rifle range. I was knocked out and my head swelled to the shape of an inverted triangle :-D.

i have slist myself, cut my self, punctured myseld with mine knife's... And i slipped and almost went down a 20 meter cliff with fast flowing river on the end, fortunaly that tree was standing there... i huged him/her ( is a tree a him or her ?)

I have cut myself many times, that happens when you use a knife a lot. But the best thing is to carry a first aid kit and keep your knives sharp (nice cuts that heals faster).
Then there is those accidents with saws, hammers and other tools, but that was when I was working as a contruction worker.

My knife bit me today. So off to the hospital for me, three stitches and a tetanus jab later back home right as nine pence! :shock:
