Shewie, what will you be using in them? If it's a fountain pen or even if not and you care about paper quality I suggest you run a couple of searchs on another forum I frequent called Fountain Pen Network as there are some much better alternatives out there.

I have one made up for a moleskine pad if you are interested - it is the same design as I made for Man of Tanith (pic 1

What size is that Graham, does it take a refilable pad ?

I want it for doing small sketches in and keeping a few notes on tracking and plant ID

it is more or less 11cm wide, 16cm high and 3cm thick in 'closed mode' - it takes a std moleskin notebook that is about 9 x 14x1cm

the pad I have got is lined but they do plain I believe..... - like this

Size sounds perfect

Can I pick up a decent quality plain pad in WHSmiths or the like ?

Now for the serious stuff, how much will it set me back ? PM if you prefer

Shewie, are you looking for unlined or lined paper? If it's to keep a detailed log/journal I recommend Alans' Journal due to the onion paper (like in bibles). Personally I use CIAK journals, they come in a variety of sizes and colours and paper options. The paper has a good texture and thickness which lends them to drawing. I've been meaning to pick up an Alwych journal as they are Scottish and I like the simplicity. I'm 3/4 way through my pocket moleskine, it's maybe the third i've had and tbh I've not been overly impressed with the paper quality - but thats more appart as I use a fountain pen and they tend to be a bit fussy with some paper.

Thanks for that mate, I'll have a look at those links

I'm planning to use it for sketching and making short notes on stuff I come across, not so much an orderly log or diary as such, more scribbles and random observations. I've gone for a Moleskine plain sketchbook to start with so I'll see how I get on with that.

As long as you stick to pencil for the sketchs you'll be fine. The QC on moleskine can be a bit haphazard and some batchs suffer badly from bleedthrough and feathering. Hardwearing little books tho. Dropped mine in a loch by accident but the water didn't soak through due to the elastic strap holding it firmly shut :)
