Hello folks! Today, we had wonderful weather here in Central Virginia. The temperature was into the mid 50s F and sunny. With the warm weather the arthritis and the foot deformities have be feeling much better so I thought I would get out for a walk along the High Bridge Trail. I only did a tiny distance (a bit over 2.5 miles total) of the overall trail, but the feet were doing well and it was such a beautiful day. Others were out enjoying the day and the trail, too. The trail is open for pedestrian, bicyclist and equestrian use. Here are the pictures:

The River Road access point.

The rails-to-trails conversion.

Picnic area along the trail.

An old railroad signal foundation.

Railroad mile marker N 146.

A young couple out for a walk.

Bicyclists enjoying the trail.

The benches were put in by a young man as his Eagle Scout Service Project, BSA.

Tam o' Crumstan

"A loupin' on stane is a very good thing,
For a man that is stiff, for a man that is auld,
For a man that is lame o' the leg or the spauld,
Or short o' the houghs, to loup on his naggie;

So said Tam o' Crumstane, unbousome and baggie;
And mountin' the stane at Gibbie's house-end,
Like a man o' great pith, wi' a grane, and a stend
He flew owre his yaud, and fell i' the midden!

The picnic area at the bridge.

Standing beside the information sign.

A closer view of the sign.

A view of the steel trestle.

Getting ready for a brew up with my Vargo Triad XE alcohol cooker. I brought the pink spork in honor of John Fenna.

Waiting for the kettle to boil.

The new trail bridge upon the old trestle.

A look at the old bridge piers.

A view of nearby farms taken from the High Bridge.

The Appomattox River flowing East.

A view looking at the river from the bridge.

Thanks for looking. :)

I haven't heard the loupin' stane in years :D
My Grandpa used to quote something like that when me and brother louped off the wee low garden wall. Good things are easy climbable stones :)

Nice walk Gordon; interesting to meander along an old railway line :approve: some of ours have been restored enough to make cycle routes across the country, but there are a lot more just left mouldering.

Hope the aches settle down; thank you for the photos :D

cheers,
M

Thanks for the nice comments and to Tony for tidying up my pictures.

MoT - I'm not too keen on visiting the big cities save the museums. I do love the rural side of visiting other places, though. :)

Toddy - Tam o'Crumstane came to mind when I saw the mounting block at the bridge.:cool:
