I was out visiting a project today where we've got a team clearing an overgrown area full of vegetation and dumped rubbish when I spied this beauty on the rubbish pile :red:

So I obviously rescued it from being dumped with everything else, saw the beneficiary and asked if he minded if I took it. He was more than happy to see it going to a good home where it'll be lovingly brought back to use :D

For those of you who don't know what it is, it's a 13" or 35cm cast iron griddle or bakestone that's about 3/8" or 10mm thick and weighs a load... no lightweight camping with this for sure :lmao: In the first picture you can see there's some pitted spots in the centre and top right quarter that appear to be from when it was cast but the other side is in pretty good shape :)

There's a picture below as well of the one I currently have in action. The one I've just got is about 3" bigger in diameter and twice as thick so it's going to make a real difference to the pizzas and other items I can cook under the fire

Nice find. Sticking it in a bucket of water for a few weeks should take most of that rust off. Sounds odd I know but it seems to work.

Nah... I'll more than likely put it to soak in some vinegar so it clears the rust right out of the pitting then season it up ready for my next outing :)

I never knew that, I was going to suggest one of those wire brush jobbies that goes in a drill.

'Tis a nice find, that's just the sort of thing I've been looking for. Assuming I don't stumble across one in a hedge somewhere, does anyone know where I might be able to buy one?

And they make lurrrrvely biscuits too :) Well spotted, Bionic eagle eyed Steve!!!

Slowworm, the Super Sausage one is reclaimed off a commercial stove griddle that was being chucked... if you got any commercial kitchen fitters/ salvagers near you for the hotel trade, try them- they're fab as they often have an excess oil drain recess and are square/ oblong :)

In the woods if possible.

You could get a bit of 10mm or 12mm plate from a scrapyard and cut it to size (or not, as the case may be). Scrapyards generally don't like the heavier stuff because their machinery often won't handle it, so you might get it for nothing.

Steve, are you sure that what you have there is cast? Not easy to tell from the photos but it looks like it might be a bit of plate, which would make the corrosion easier to understand.

:lmao:... nope, they tend to lift illicitly manhole covers

The pitting has the appearance of casting faults but once I get the rust cleaned off I'll be able to tell better :)

Thats the one, Martin! I loved the way the heat travelled through it so although it zoned a bit, it was pretty uniform in the heat although the guys had a break in the supporting bricks and pulled the fire under it for a good fierce kwik-time brekkie heat ;)
