Just stick whatever whatever you want to harden into some ashes that are near the fire and good and hot. You dont have to leave it in very long. The hot, dry ashes apparently just sucks the moisture right out of the wood. I've done several things, starting out with holding the stick over the fire and this almost invariably burns the stick. Hot coals are a bit too much too quick. I think you will find the ashes work best.

Nice one.

In Oz the aboriginals (and everyone else) call it a gidgie.

While you are stalking your fish why not drop a couple of these in the creek or river mouth if you have crustaceans that is.
