Just up the road (20 min walk) is a place called Woolton Village quite a historic place but it's little known history is that it used to be a major sandstone quarry. Most of the older more impressive civic buildings and landmarks are made from Woolton stone (as are a few across the world), one of the last buildings to be made from Woolton sandstone was the Anglican Cathedral and all Quarry operations stopped in the late 80's / early 90's and housing was built in the main works. But when I was a kid I was told that they had blown up some tunnels in the area to seal them for safety. But still as a kid me and a few friends took a look around and found nothing.
But... It looks like one still survives one of the much much older ones.

I can feel my inner child screaming "DON'T WAIT GO NOW!"
