The Japanese higonokami knife was invented in 1896. It’s a type of friction folder with a protruding tang. Higonokami knives were hand-forged and exceedingly popular in Japan for many years before they were banned.


I had no idea Higonokami are banned in Japan?
 
They've worded that strangely - I seem to recall it was blades in general which were banned in, IIRC, 1963..............
I don't remember why, if I ever knew, but I remember it being reported at the time; something to do with their pacifist constitution post WW2, perhaps?
