Made this for my father from a seasoned stave of holly pruned from the back garden

That's very nicely done indeed; all my favourite sticks are Holly and it always looks particularly nice when paired with a bit of antler.

Lucky dad :)

That has a lot of of character. I'm sure it will be appreciated - I, for one, would be chuffed to receive such a gift.

Good job!

I can't stop picking it up and looking at it.it turned out a lot better that I thought. The cracks at the top end I filled with resin to hopefully prevent them going further

Holly is one of the most unforgiving of woods when it comes to splitting and cracking; whatever you do with it whilst seasoning the attrition rate is always high, but the results almost always rewarding. I think it's the wood
that has the nicest hand feel of them all, but it's also known for becoming very slippery when wet. It was used traditionally to keel fishing boats that need to be beached as the slipperyness (?) made this easier.

That's a lovely walking stick that you have made there. Its really stunning. Your Dad will love it and be very proud that you made it. I have never made anything out of Holy. I have made a couple of sticks out of willow and hazel that have turned out OK . I think i might give holy a go one day now iv seen how good it could turn out.

I would walk with that. My sense of balance is rotten (concussion?) so I walk with a cane to keep from tipping over.
That one has lots of interesting wood features to look at. My cane is also figured wood, good conversation feature.

Make a few more. I predict that they will not go unsold. Your finish is excellent.

For me, I have to lean on mine for balance. The handle part is quite big, fat and 2" wide.
I think a really skinny handle would be hard on hand bones with any geezer arthritis.
