I am in the final stages of polishing the handle of my puuko. It has a brass spacer next to the birchof the handle. I would like the brass polished, but when I polish it the polish/brass mix stains the birch black:( and I have to sand it down again to get the colour back, but this then scratches up the finish on the brass so it needs polishing again:dunno:. Is there a way out of this?

Hi mate I used this polishing thing my wife had for her nails, it was like a nail file but made from like a rubber, it worked well and polished the brass spacer quite well, until she found out!

Get some stropping compound on some leather. Before you finish the edge on your blade, rotate the bolster edge across the surface. Shiney as a new pin.
Do the face with brasso or similar beforehand.

Aha! An excellent suggestion, I will try the tape. Wifey has (for the price of fetching her some choccy and a drink) provided the buffing block as described. I am now wondering just how sharp I could make things with one of these!
