Hi Launditch1 the burgher shaped one is Basalt from Jura weighing well over 1cwt
some of the camps in the past have been "boulder missions"
just a few in the front garden
runningflowform.jpg

the large speckled one back right is a Borrowdale volcanic from Sunderland point.
Have you any photos of your collection ?
This one would make a great garden feature

a failed attempt at an owl (missed the bit i was aiming for with the axe and took off half the head lol!) becomes a sacrificial fire idol in a few minutes.

The Rainy Side of the Lakes.
There are some great fire idols there.

Big Swede and I actually debated them while watching one of his burn. If more people decide to make them ( if nothing else, it can prevent your house getting overloaded with spoons ), then it would be good to differentiate between the "wild " and "domestic" ones. Some of the domestic ones have serious artistic flair, and are a shame to burn, while the more savage wild ones are less of a wrench to lose.

Regarding their origins, the first time that I encountered one was when Big Swede carved one up and burnt it on one of our camping trips last year. I don't know whether it's a Swedish thing or his own invention.

Cheers, Michael.

Alright!

Gloves are off, gauntlets are thrown, etc etc.

First off, some rules regarding 'wild' fire idols;

  • They should be made from a single piece of wood
  • They should never ever be spared!
  • They should have recognisable facial features

Actually I used to sit and make small figures out of wood as a kid, mostly farm animals (boxy cows were a favourite), but also the odd gnome. And then I'd burn them. Weird eh? Divorces does that to kids, a small life-tip from me to the parents on this site... :D No seriously, I didn't burn them. But I still think it's a lot funnier carving crude faces than kukksas and spoons.

I will make a grand one this weekend!

Alright!

Gloves are off, gauntlets are thrown, etc etc.

First off, some rules regarding 'wild' fire idols;

  • They should be made from a single piece of wood - what about arms?
  • They should never ever be spared! - oops
  • They should have recognisable facial features - i couldn't be bothered with the last one lol! just burn!!! :D :D

i think the 'domestic' ones are more carvings to be admired than burnt, so shouldn't really count as idols.
how about a competition for best 'wild' fire idol?? what could the prize be??? hmmm....
