A biggie went off on a point between our island, Cuba and Jamaica
It was a nasty one, large, slow side to side movements for several minutes.

Tsunami waves observed.

More quakes are expected, with tsunami risk

Our emergency warns that the likelihood is for a tsunami 3-4 feet high.
All of us went home from shopping (wife) and work ( me and son)

Our house has a second story. But we are on a canal facing North.

Our pool lost about 1/2 of the water in the quake.

It is scary. I prefer being stuck in a snowstorm in the Scandinavia mountains.

Hey just get your grab bag and hit higher ground now. Don't wait for official warning. Better safe than sorry. Least you won't be sleeping out in minus temps like here. Just go NOW! After quakes will come as you know. Be safe rather than sorry. Good luck.

Risk over, but more shocks and tsunami risk are predicted.
No high ground here.
We will be fine.

You be safe too in the cold!

Edit: very, very light damage here. Some caverns opened up on lawns etc, stuff hanging on walls down al, over island. Police heli’s and cars moving around.

The only damage our family has suffered is a smashed water - fountain ornament ( fish).

I'm fine.fire lit. Down duvet and hot water bottle. I too can cope with cold easily. Small amount of snow last night but most gone by midday.
Been turning my plastic sled into a pulk just for fun today :)
More concerned about the flu virus.

Hey yes this flu bug is a serious concern. Have you got your hazzard suit and full face vapour mask yet? :)
I'm just making sure I've got loads of teabags sugar and milk. Baked beans and chocolate bars :)
Seriously though got plenty of food so can be self sufficient without going out for a month. Plenty of dettol and hand gel... well I always do anyway so not much to do realy if it gets bad. Got masks on order arrives friday. I'm set.
Better to have and not need, than need and not have.
Used to be a brownie and girl guide so was brought up on "be prepared "
I'm not worried just a bit concerned as I'm in the "fatal for me" category.
Just being cautious. Hope it's not needed.
Can you imagine what it would be like if China had a serious earthquake now??????
Your quake just made me think of that. That would be realy scary!
So far ( touch wood/fingers and toes crossed ) we are ok here.

glad to read you're safe! didn't feel anything of your quake over here although we get them, too (experienced only minor ones (knocks 3times on his head) over here so far). my dog hopefully tells me if she feels a big one coming!

seems nobody here is worried much about the virus, yet but i've friends in Hong Kong (and other asian countries)...

Aftershocks, several an hour since.
The biggest one was about 6.5.
We feel a tingling or a weird ‘movement’ on your feet and bum ( if you sit) when they hit.

I wear face, eye and hand protection.
Of course, not enough for a virus. Insallah as they say.

We have a good supply too. Hurricane supply.

Tsunamis scare me more then hurricanes. You get a good bit of warning with most hurricanes but the earthquakes that trigger tsunamis are usually without warning and the ensuing tsunamis travel at the speed of sound.

How are things now? Hope it's all calming down. Glad the sunami threat is over.
Hope things are beginning to get back to normal.
We can never tell what is going to happen next. Keep alert and safe.

Thank you. Schools and some businesses are closed down, checking for structural damage and damage in warehouses with high shelving.
Lots of sinkholes opened, but (I think) none on a road, so no accidents.
The Tsunami came, but was measured to be less than a foot in height.

We have had many aftershocks, just over 4 in strength.

After the devastating hurricane Ivan, the building codes changed, and everything here is super well designed.
This earthquake was almost 10 times stronger than the one that devastated Haiti a couple of years back.
Shows how important it is with good, well built buildings.

Damage in Jamaica and Cuba. Old buildings.

The positive with this is that people are more aware of what can happen.

I hope you are well too, and the cold snap has passed!
I always felt when living in UK that those short cold snaps were worse than a proper Scandinavian winter. So difficult to dress, no studded tyres, and of course, no proper winter clothes!
Keep safe, keep warm!

thanks for that link -- earthquakes (and tsunamis) are of a concern here, too... not to mention 14volcanoes...

the inhabitants of the Andaman Islands survived the 2004 tsunami because they were warned by the animal's behaviour and fled to higher ground so i'll paying attention to my little munchkin when taking her to the beach...

So after the biggie, a couple 4.4, a couple around 3.5 and 25+ small ones, the result for our propert:
2 hardened glass and laminated, ceiling to floor windows, cracked
Marble tiles on one floor cracked across the room
Pool border tiles detached
Large outside ornament broken.
Some house stuff damaged ( nothing expensive)

Getting in quotes now for the Insurance claim.
Lots of damage like that here. Which means house insurances on Island will sky rocket! :(
