Joe they did used to make sleeping bag liners for the 58 Pattern bags and there was only one way to describe them "Awfull", they were thin lightweight green plasticky (a bit like nylon) things. I used one when I was in training, but never since. The memory stuck :(

Hi Squidders,

I've got a 58 bag liner if you really want one, it would only cost you postage, but as already mentioned they are quite awfull. The other thing you could do is get a cocoon/bag style one and doctor it to suit your 58 bag with a central opening.
As I said mate if you want the 58 liner as a pattern to make your own PM me and I'll let you have it.

So I guess you can't get a nice cotton type one then.

Thanks for the generous offer Brian but I was after specifically a decent cotton type one. I may have a go at making one using the bag as a template.

Cheers

Joe

I saw a load of sand coloured 58 pat cotton ones in 'Johns Army Surplus in Merstham Surrey' and 'Neyland Surplus in Pembrokeshire' last year for about £5 each.

They were originally issued for the first gulf war and have 'Grandby 1991' on the label and a velcro closure down the center.

I've also seen thin olive nylon ones for £1 which looked cheap and nasty and some thick olive coloured ones which looked like they were made out of recycled clothing and looked itchy as hell. Make sure you get the correct size for your bag - I think there are 3 different lengths.

I think Johns Army surplus has since moved to 73-75 Horley Road, Redhill (Tel 01737761755).

You can buy a cotton liner at almost any youth hostel. Just slash it down the middle and hem it to make it centre opening. You can sew little squares of velcro down the slash line to keep it closed at night.

I used a silk liner for the first time this weekend and what a difference it made! One night involved numb feet, but the next with liner, I slept like a log. Wish I'd bought one eons ago.

I bought one recently also, from Lidl amazingly. Wonderfully comfortable, light and warm. It made my sleeping bag a pleasure to get into. The blurb on the package reckons it increases the thermal value of your sleeping bag by +5 degrees C. After sleeping in it every night for two weeks I'd be hard pressed to go back to cotton.
