Bushcraft is his best series IMO. Aboriginal Britain and Birchbark Canoe are personal favourites of mine. If you'd added Northern Wilderness to that list it would've been my exact choice too.
That kind of ambiguity with the flowery statements can of course be a bad thing, but I would also argue that simply having that space to define it as you please, gives the freedom to make this "bushcraft" thing very individual - which again may or may not be a good thing depending on your views...
Interesting thoughts. What about people that undeniably are masters of bushcraft? Like the Hadza for example, to say they don't have a kinship with their surroundings is perplexing to me.
Of course it's hard work, but knowledge is certainly not the same as wisdom.
I know what you're saying...
There's nothing like a quick dip and wash in a cold river in the morning to wake you up and start the day well. I don't know what it is - possibly just psychological - but I feel a lot more energetic after a cold wash than no wash at all.
Thanks for the review, very interesting. I've been after an EDC with a nice wooden handle for a while.
Just a quick question: is everything stainless (blade included)?
I haven't used this one in particular, but going on previous experiences with Gelert tents I'd stay clear. I know that's a dodgy way to think about new gear but they've put me off over the years.
It sounds nice, but that's not the reason for it being true. It could have been said in an ugly way and still be true.
I fail to see how bushcraft is neither a "treasure trove of wisdom" nor a kinship with the wilderness. Of course there are finer details in that, but as a broad generalisation...
Ray Mears nails it at the start of his Bushcraft series.
"It's about much more than just survival: bushcraft is a treasure trove of wisdom, that enables us to feel a real kinship with the landscape."
