Been a while, but I've not left the fold

Been ages since I last posted anything but just a quick one to show you a could of recent aquisitions and a tool I made for a stone carving friend. Just need to give it a beeswax finish and maybe a bit of a leather home.

So, I fell asleep for three months...

Not really, I've been working, init. How is everyone doing? I'm ashamed to say that I haven't even visited the site for quite some time. In the meantime I've had a haircut and a beard trim and renewed my membership just now. Not had any outdoor or anvil time at all. Gah! What have missed...

Steve and Chris's Adventures in Metalworld

Our very own Lannyman took the trouble to lug pretty much all his kit (it seemed) over to mine. He'd tack welded up some carbon / mild sandwiches to have a go with so we went over to my shared allotment for a beat. I didn't take any photo's of the set up because we were all about getting stuck...

    Aussie Water bottle pouch pattern?

Hi, a strange question but does anyone have one of those jellybean water pouches? much in the way I made a first aid pouch out of canvas and leather, I'd like to try the same with one of these. I don't want to buy one because I'm tight and it wouldn't get used, but I'd like to get an idea of...

    Volumising footbeads

Odd title aside, I bought a cracking pair of well used boots a while back and they're just that little bit big for me (0.5 of a size). Whacking in a couple of pairs of socks sorts it out but when it warms up I don't fancy that. Are they any footbeds out there that add a bit of volume to a boot...

    Finally! An actual anvil!

Well not quite. Saw this on the bay and paid a paltry £20. It's the perfect size for what I want too (about a foot long). Looks like it was cut, but not finished. Flap disks are at the ready. Finally I'll have a flat beating area bigger than a 50p coin! I commute by rail daily and can't help...

    Bored, so I made this.

I was over at Paul Kirtleys blog last night and see's that he makes use of those RM canvas pouches. Since I had no easter eggs I thought I'd have a go and making the posh one since I could never see myself ever forking out for one. Made out of 16oz canvas and some leather scraps (I'll have to...

How do I get into shooting?

I was reading this thread yesterday which stirred old memories of airgun shooting with my grandad as a nipper. Relatively new chap BushcraftAndSurvival posted how difficult it is go get shooting unless you're in bed with a landowner. This got me thinking about how I would start shooting? I did...

My first venture into leatherwork - Scandinavian Sheath

I've had a Enzo trapper for nearly a year, sat upstairs without anywhere to live, so I decided I better crack on an sort it out. Ever the Scandinaviphile, I went trad. 4mm full veg tanned shoulder, with buffalo horn fixture. All in all I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. She...

    Fiebings oil dyes - pointers?

Now then, leatherworkers. Just a quick question regarding anyone who uses the Fiebings professional oil dyes. I've got 3; saddle tan, light brown and dark brown. I think they're all really quite dark, anyone else think this way? I know there are a lot of variables in getting the colour but the...

    Binoculars? 8x32

Hi all, decided it was time I got hold of some binoculars for 'general outdoor use'. Before I go and buy a new pair. I wonder if anyone has upgraded recently and has a set they might be thinking of getting rid of? If you have a pair of 8x32 roof binoculars, with a good near focus, 7˚ish...

    Show me your jigs!

I've been wracking my brain trying to design a simple jig that I can use for bevelling my forged knives on my belt sander. It's one of those hand sanders that you can flip it on it's back and clamp it onto your bench. So I'm working out some bits and pieces the see what will work and what...

Odd question: how big is a shoulder...

Hi guys, a leather question if you will. Noticed Tandy have a special on for single purchase shoulders at around £35. Question is, how big, in square footage is a shoulder? Hope this isn't a how long is a piece of string type question!

    An afternoon with Mark Constable

I saw a post on here about Mark Constable and his bucket forges so I dropped him an email to ask more about it. We exchanged quite a few emails over the next few weeks and discovered that both he and I have the same interest when it comes to bladesmithing, woodworking tools. We both love the...

    Hammer Time

As it draws closer to my visit over to Hull to do a bit of a course with Mark Constable, I managed to pick up a blacksmith hammer head over on BB. This weekend I gave it a dressing and made a grippy handle out of some cherry. The handle went a bit south at the top as I started to thin it down...

    Recommend me some leather balm

Hi Folks, I have a pair of stockman type goatskin leather gloves that I like to wear when doing certain things. Problem is they tend to get wet and muddy and as a result harden up. I'd like to make them last and was thinking of getting some kind of balm for them to keep the leather...

    Wille Sundqvist - A request

Hi all, this one is for all you woodworkers out there. I've been trying to source a copy of Sundqvist's Spoon Carving book for quite some time. My library doesn't have it and haven't had it come up for a while. Although I appreciate the rare(ish) nature of the book, I'm not prepared to spend a...

This weekend has been a good weekend

and I've hardly been outside. Firstly, my Trevor Ablett stag clip point arrived. I have to say that this is the most well balanced, weighted and comfortable knife I have yet to own. For less than £50 to your door you'd be MAD not to get one. Secondly, I learned how to strop properly thanks to...

    Stropping compound woes

Ok, so not a 'woe' as such but I just want to check. I use a leather board strop with green wax type compound. When I whack it on it gets quite thick and ends up flaking off eventually. So I thought I'd have a look if that was the right way to do it. I found a woodworking site that...

    What wood is this?

I've been meaning to ask this for ages. I handled my woodworkers using a bit of wood we've had for ages. Thought it might be rose (the bark is a reddish brown) but it's got a really perculiar grain. Any ideas? I was thinking that perhaps it's diseased. Poor pics below.
