[Kew lecture] Shamans, scientists and plants: exploring the bio-cultural diversity of

I certainly thought it was very interesting, currently in final year of an Anthropology Bsc so was certainly very relevant to my course and personal interest. I did feel that most of what was said he has previously covered in his book 'The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge' (a...

    Celestial Navigation.

Whilst reading your post I immediatley thought of the same book I bought after taking a great interest in celestial navigation which I think is a fantastic skill to have and a fascinating and fun past-time. I learnt a new constellation everynight when I took my dog out for a walk (which added...

    Garden of Eden found.......

Lets not be too hasty to judge, the more research done there on new species, the more likely it will be marked as an area of natural beauty and left relatively in peace. Thats my hope, at least

    Guide to ID trees

There's some good advice and sites on this thread for anyone interested in identifying trees. The most helpful resource for me has been the 'Collins TREE GUIDE', its great as it shows all the different types of buds, leaves, bark, etc., for nearly all the British and European tree varieties...

Cold weather bivvying for dogs !

My bushcraft companion is a Yorkshire Terrier, and he sleeps on top of my sleeping bag (I sleep in a hammock) in anything but winter (doesn't have the fur for winter), when he migrates into my sleeping bag. Great hot-water bottle and personal alarm if anything comes close at night (not a yapper...

    What Kip Mat ?

I always sleep on a Thermarest Trail 3 Regular. I'm 6'2" and doubt I'll ever use anything else as they are excellent for sleeping and sitting on.

    Carrying Water.

I use an Ortlieb 4L (with shower attachment and soon to get a drinking tube) which is kept in my pack, and I also have a 1L British Army canteen which is close to hand for drinking on the move and also security against any punctures (however unlikely as the material is seriously tough) on the...

    Water purifiers

Its a big topic, and I'm sure everyone will have their specific methods to filtering the water, but I never rush anywhere when I'm camping so always have the time to use the millbank and boil a few litres when need-be. Which is why, although I have the MSR Waterworks I won't be taking it...

    Water purifiers

I have an MSR water filter, but have been thinking (having read a few of these discussions about filters on BCUK) that as quick filtering and boiling will do the job, why not just carry a millbank bag (as they pack very small) and boil the water? Saves space in the pack and money in the pocket...

    british army bivi bags

I use the DPM Bivi from outdoorcode and find them to be brilliant. Easy to get in and out of, and I've used it in high winds and felt nothing except the rocking of my hammock and the chill on my nose! Would recommend getting one, in my experience military gore-tex is hard to beat kit.

    Waterborne Viruses ?

I'm glad to hear that Leon-1 said water should be rolling boiled for 10 minutes. I filter all my drinking water through a Millbank Bag and then rolling boil it for 10 minutes. The way I see it, you might as well eradicate even the smallest chance of getting ill from water. You want to enjoy a...

    Tipi Tarps

I sleep in mine with me, my kit and dog (even though he's quite small so probably doesn't count as taking up room) and its comfy for a while. Obviously, if you were intending to camp long-term you would probably want something bigger just for extra comfort, but for short-term (longest I've spent...

    Stuffing Goretex bivi bag

I use the British Army Bivvy and don't think you can go wrong using an item tried and tested in harsh conditions for years and still used. Its a great peice of kit which allows really easy access in and out of. I keep mine folded at the bottom of my pack (easy to get to and keeps everything...

    karrimor 45ltr

How about putting a brew kit (essential item) in an easy place to get to, a cup of tea solves any problem! Ive got a Karrimor Sabre 60-100 and really like the shoulder and hip straps, very comfy. I think Karrimor are a great make for Backpacks and will almost certainly be sticking to them if my...

VERY late, but some decent pic's of my kayak!

The puffins are very good collapsable kayaks, thats me in the nearest kayak, and i had my yorkshire terrier, 5 litres of water,10 days of tinned food, firewood in it along with all my camping gear and it could have taken a lot more, need I say more? Very pleased with it.
