I have the alonsaks (bought direct from USA) but have just found something very similar at Tesco's, pack of 8 for a quid. the quality is excellent, i won't be buying alonsaks again....

Alpkit is OK - decent quality and fantastic prices. However the best deal around at the moment IMO is for the Kimmlite Finch found here: http://www.outdoorwarehouse.co.uk/acatalog/Kimmlite_Clearance.html I have just bought one of these and the quality cannot be bettered - highest 800...

hats off to RM for making a series on british bushcraft by starting with a nice long trip to Oz :rolleyes: not sure i agree with laying the foundations bit - you can't start every new series by ignoring the fact that you have covered all the points previously. in detail. enjoyed it though!

to be fair to RM the laplander saw is sold at the same high price on nearly every other bushcraft site. RM has help to make bushcraft highly popular but he's not the only one cashing in - its quite noticeable how other woodlore knife type makers have jacked up their prices quite markedly this...

lets hope Alan Wood doesnt think of it in those terms.....

i was on the phone to woodlore a couple of weeks ago so i asked them what the waiting time was for a woodlore knife (have no plan to order one by the way) and was advised that the waiting list is now OVER 3 YEARS :lmao:

those who sing the praises of the likes of the Vulcan, Karrimors etc - I suspect have never used the top packs from the USA, I have and my Vulcan really is rubbish in comparison to them. Ospreys are light years ahead in design and therefore comfort, not generally any lighter though. Osprey packs...

hi cathy - you mention that no-one criticises the Berghaus Vulcan - well I have!!!!! I had a Vulcan for years - VERY mediocre comfort/carry, hard wearing though. I cut mine up significantly in order to reduce the weight! Berghaus, Karrimor etc simply do not compare with the top US makers -...

the point is to watch the weather forecasts and kit up as appropriate - and camp in warmer spots avoiding low areas where cold air will settle and i've camped out at -22C at Xmas about 10 years ago when there was an amazing period of cold weather, most beautiful time I've ever experienced in...

i actually use a 90 litre pack for long winter trips! however i have built up a collection of lightweight gear - which is also highly compact - this allows me to carry a synthetic duvet and down sleeping bag lightly stuffed on top of all the other gear. most people do carry way too much...

sounds like most people here are carrying way too much gear if there is no room in their backpack for a loosly stuffed sleeping bag :rolleyes:

you should never compress a sleeping bag - this is a surefire way of damaging the insulation (disaterously quickly in the case of synthetic fills). Bags should be carried loosly packed at the top of a backpack and completely loose at home (eg in a large pillow case to allow full lofting)

forgot to mention that i slagged off Petzl headlamps earlier... the new issue of TGO (the great outdoors...) (Nov 2005) has a review of headlamps - the Tikka XP gets the "best buy" award and the Myo XP "recommended"! my Princton Tec EOS also gets a "recommended" but the Petzls are rated...
