Rise, rise you all! You Jacks of all Trades!

Here is an interesting perspective on the value of being a Jack of all trades. http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2007/09/14/the-top-5-reasons-to-be-a-jack-of-all-trades/ I have reasons of my own, but these are mostly good ones. Enjoy your day

    Coffee

Yeah, tried that once, it doesn't work. Worst coffee I ever (tried) to drink.

    Into the wild.

I went the same road. In Brazil, 17 years, money only for the outbound fare. Got helped by some hippies that taught me how to craft some stuff to secure some money, how to eat cheap. Broke my arm in a nasty fall a week after arriving, shortly before actually getting to the wild places I wanted...

    'Buy Your Own Wood'

I have a friend selling a huge property in Brazil. All pristine Amazonian rainforest. And if you compare with prices for woodland here... He is offering it in the Brazilian market for the equivalent to a little more than 100 thousand pounds. If I had the money, I would be already packing my...

Any comments so far for the new survivorman season?

Survivorman is a much better show than born survivor. The video speaks for itself: Survivorman Vs. Bear Grylls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j_LkdCt2P8&mode=related&search= :lmao:

    Akkermans' book?

Does anyone knows if his new book is any good? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bushcraft-Skills-Survive-Step-step/dp/184476270X/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_4/203-0134059-6826300 There is not even a comment on amazon... and my list is to big to buy anything that appears... at least not without consulting you...

    How Representative is BCUK?

I believe you are right, shep. In courses I've been, those not on BCUK outnumbered those that know and/or use the forum. At least two to one. I was a little surprised, but I guess it just makes sense. Many seen bushcraft on TV, or newspapers, for instance. Went straight to bookstores or...

    A little bit of anthropology...

It became commonplace to quote the anthropologist Carleton S. Coon, "we and our ancestors are the same people". It sounds nice, but what he meant at the time is very different from what bushcrafters suppose it means. I agree that we and the ancient man are the same. We are (or can be) trackers...

Yeah, can use that. And now, it seems that the regular search field on top of the page is working (although it is a little strange, partly covered by the "important notice") Thanks

    Trapping mice and hantavirus

Thanks Jodie, that helps. But I am still interested in references from wilderness survival books, and about what they have to say about it. Does anyone have any idea? Is it worth considering? Or it is best to just rule out the mice? (problem is, they are abundant almost everywhere, and would...

    Trapping mice and hantavirus

Well, I quit trying to find out by myself. I tried all keyword combinations I could think of for a search, at no avail. Trapping mice for meat: how worried should I be of hantavirus? Is throwing them in the fire - without gutting - enough to get rid of the virus? I am not...

They were recomended to me in another thread. I already kenw Tim Lively's website, it always caught my attention due to the quality of the hammer finish on his knives. After exchanging a few e-mails, I decided to buy a copy. Here is my e-mail to him: "Hi Tim, I was very impressed by the...

    Survival videos

Now, seriously. I heard from a guy on the documentaries industry that Hoods Woods sells amazing amounts of those videos, the figures, if I am not mistaken, are around 300 DVDs/week. Considering that, I certainly was expecting a better product. Glad I decided to ask first in the forums. :)...

    Survival videos

no problem, I can provide some alter-promotion. Here it is: {well, I can delet it myself; I just would like to know what is the problem if I am not giving a link to a site or video of my own? I understand self promotion is forbidden, but I really thought the video was quite funny...

    Birch bark canoe

Just make a google search for [canvas canoe]. It is actually a different kind of canoe, but it has its appeal, especially for some folks. One good point is that is actually easier to get good canvas than it is to come accross the right birch bark.
