    WOODLORE FUNDAMENTAL COURSE

I'm booked on the Lochside Fundamental course with Woodlore in late September 2018 and I will report back after. I did a similar course with Woodsmoke in the Lake District 10 years ago and that was great and opened up a world that had been alien to me growing up. I've been away from bushcraft...

    Course Discount

Hi folks. Just seen a great deal on a bushcraft basics course at Woodsmoke school in the Lake District. They are offering £200 off their week-long 'Woodlander' course at the end of this month which makes it only £395. This probably sounds like an advert but I did the course a few years ago...

    Carrying DLSR Quick Access

I have bought a Black Rapid strap (RS-7 variety) and it is a far superior experience to having a regular strap which tends to give me a sore neck and gets in the way a bit. When you have it on you can barely feel the weight of the camera/lens. The only negative is the price. I doubt anything...

    A different direction

It's like 10,000 naked people sitting on the beach waiting to jump in the water (at least the top part of the structure). More morbidly, the first word that popped in to my head was 'holocaust', as in mass graves. :( I will book an appointment with a shrink in the morning. :nana:

    Who Cant STAND It????

The only thing I can say in response to this thread is to pass on a couple of quotes and hope someone can take something from them: "The greatest day in your life and mine is when we take total responsibility for our attitudes." John Maxwell "We find only the world we look for" Henry David...

    going feral

Do you have a way of getting back in to society if you and when you might want to in the future? I guess you have a home now, so if you give it up could you go back to your parents for example? You don't want to make yourself homeless if it doesn't work out. Well, you say you've been there so...

Short Three Quarter (3/4) Length Sleeping Mats

If you're not sure, and depending on your sleeping set up, you could try sleeping further down on a full length mat to see if you get on with your legs hanging off the end before spending money on a 3/4 size mat?

alpkit V snugpak bivi bags, which is best?

Personal experience with the Hunka is that it is not small as in short, but when you are in it can be a little tight fitting. It's the only bivi bag I've ever used though so maybe that's normal? I'm 5' 8", carry a bit of excess around the middle admittedly, and I do wonder if I should have...

2012 Olympic Tickets Going on Sale from 15th March

I was living in Sydney during the 2000 Games and I know several people who rented their homes out and went abroad in a fit of cynicism about how bad it would be to be in the city during the Olympics (even though they lived in suburbs). They all regretted it after seeing it on TV from afar and...

    Our forests are safe

Fantasic news! I really thought they would just ignore public opinion and do what they wanted anyway like they normally do.

    woodsmoke bow making course

I haven't done that specific course, but I did a week-long course a couple of years ago with Woodsmoke and I found them very good. They've got a great woodland site just by Lake Windermere and the instructors were really knowledgable. From the link you posted, I see Steve Hanton is taking the...

    Recommend me a folding shovel!!

Brilliant! I had a good chuckle at around 4mins in where it was used as a shield.

    Titanium, should i, shouldn't i

So true. I'm forever looking to shave a few grams off the weight of my kit and often think I could actually lose the weight of my whole pack if I stopped being a salad dodger!

    New Ray Mears TV series???

I was pleasantly surprised at how much detail he actually went in to. Many references to the signs he was following in his tracking and sharing his knowledge. Far more detailed than the last couple of series he's done. I'm not sure what you're expecting really. Should he be swinging from the...

    New Ray Mears TV series???

If it's 'just another' wildlife programme then brilliant! I really love wildlife programmes! Like has been said already, RM has covered the same content a few times over his many previous series and it would be difficult to go in to more detail and have the programme appeal to your average...

    New Ray Mears TV series???

The wildlife in the recent series has been more about the tracking element of bushcraft so it's still been 'bushy'.

    How to start..

The books mentioned above are good for uses of different woods - 'Bushcraft' by Mors Kochanski in particular, from memory. I'd definitely go for 'Essential Bushcraft' by Mearsy as well as it offers a good overview of bushcraft and is well presented and illustrated. For tree identification...

    How to start..

If you're not already familiar with identifying trees/plants correctly then I think that is a great place to start. It will also get you out in to the woods to practice and you'll start feeling more comfortable in those surroundings.
