That's what I did, worked it over a board as it dried. I soaked it in a brew made from a bunch of old tea bags first though, for about a month. Rinsed and rinsed it and it stayed nicely brown. Hopefully it gave it a vegetable tan to stop it from rotting eventually. I haven't gotten any wet again...
