    Camp oven/box oven

I have seen the cardoard ovens but I was looking to make something a little more robust and permanent. I guess the coals would have to be a reasonable distance from the baking tray to prevent the food from burning on the bottom. Thinking about it, having a base to place the coals on allows the...

    Camp oven/box oven

I'm looking to make an oven for use with an open fire. To make the oven I have some offcuts from cooker hoods. The metal is U shaped, roughly 250mm (10") across the bottom and 200mm (8") high on either side. I was unsure of a several design features, how useful/essential they are and the best...

Thanks for the suggestions Glosfisher, a very informative post. A lot of food for thought and googling to come.Got to see where we can fit it all the activities in now. Its always good to hear from people with first hand experience. especially places to stay away from, as you dont usually get...

    Vegtan leather and Pyrography

One trick I have seen in the Pyrography books when burning on leather is to have a fan on, pointing away from your work. This draws the smoke away from you and doesn't cool the tip. My mum always used to come into the kitchen when I was doing pyrography and say "someones got a fire going...

Do you have any particular company in mind for white water rafting? With regards to insurance rafting is probably the most extreme activity we are likely to be doing, plus we already have insurance. Will let you know of the best stuff when I get back. That zip slide looks awesome but I think...

    Canadian Rockies

My brother and I are going to Canada in 2 weeks time. We are starting in Vancouver and driving to Calgary, stopping for a few days at various places on the way, over 14 days. We are looking to do whale watching in Vancouver and white water rafting somewhere. Can anyone recommend any other...

    firewood

Birch is a good all round firewood which will burn hot. Like you say its not quite so good as others but nonetheless still worth the effort. Hazel does burn a bit quicker than most of the other hardwoods though.

    2008 Sun Run

Yep I'm going. I will keep a look out, maybe I will see you down there. Is the wedding theme your group theme or is it the sun run theme. i.e last years theme was a toga party which to be frank was rubbish, hardly anyone was wearing them. Don't know weather I will be doing the sun or moon run...

    Knife making questions

Well I have decided on the black liners and have ordered them. Thanks for the offer shep but I will stick with the kingwood. Conversely the lower piece of kingwood in the picture is spare, and I also have some paduak as well from my last knife.

    Knife making questions

I know its a bit of a bump but rather than starting a new thread I thought I would post here. It may seem daft but I can't decide on which colour spacers to get. I am using 'Kingwood' as pictured below. The top one has white spirit on, which is similar to how it will look when finished...

As far as I know, I think that the width of the packs are the same. It is only the height that is different. I just had a search on the web and thats what I found.

    Knife making questions

By across the blade I presume you mean blade to the spine (just to clarify). There does seem to be a bit of a split on weather to keep sanding in one direction or alternate. I did start off by sanding in one direction but now that someone has explained why they alternate, I can see the logic...

    Knife making questions

Yeah I'm happy with the one I've got. Its only the appearance that made me choose a different blade but the one I have got has a scandi grind instead of a flat grind. But I'm not bothered about that. Thats what I have been doing but i just wanted to make sure. Thanks

    Knife making questions

Thanks for all your help everyone. I will just keep going through the grades of wet & dry, then stop when I'm happy with the finish. Do I keep sanding the same direction with each grit? Although I don't know if I have to return the knife because I was accidentally sent the wrong one.

    Knife making questions

Yeah taping the blade is a very useful tip. Saves the plasters! The reason i only went upto 400 grit is because its the finest grit I have. I will have to buy some finer papers. Where can I buy these by the sheet online? As I dont really want a pack of ten. I have taken 2 photos to clarify...

    Knife making questions

I have just purchased an Enzo Trapper 95 made from D2 steel. There was a powder coating on the blade which i wanted to remove, so I didn't hesitate in using wet and dry paper. I started on 240grit then 400grit, onto 0000 wire wool and finally used brasso. The metal is quite shiny but i can still...
