Sandbender..thanks for info on traditional garb from pics.
Jakunen, I often wondered about those cloaks but okay you cleared it up by explaining how they were boiled in oil/oversized to capture warmth/leather edge reinforcements and HEAVY! so they were warm enough to sleep in!

Thanks everyone!
I found on the web a similar concept called ECOTAT by a Richard Haislip in Virginia Beach..the design and purpose appear to be similar. Food for thought on how to get an item to do more than one thing!

leon-1,
what did you use the pertx zoot suit for, as sleeping gear? If it gets wet, does it dry out fast? Do you sweat a lot if you are wearing it while moving?

From what I have seen in old books and movies folks in Europe are always depicted as wearing cloaks and some sort of hooded cowl akin to a monk's costume.
Any clues as to what folks back in olden times (or any time frame) wore in the outdoors as an outer garment? The only thing I can figure is...
Has anyone here ever used a zoot suit, made out of parachute material? Supposed to be used by the forces or so advertisers claim. What different things have folks made out of surplus or "acquired" parachutes?

Hi all!
Has anyone ever tried or run across a Bivanorak from Hilleberg in Sweden? Supposed to be issued to Swedish air force as survival gear and work as an anorak/sleeping bag etc...made out of nylon. The design looks like a good idea but I do not know about the material. Any comments?

Thanks everyone! Viking, thanks for posting that link!
Moss.. I was looking at this as an emergency way to filter water...had read about the soda can filter and thought that in the event of a disaster it might be useful to know.
Thanks all!

ChrisKavanaugh,
thanks!
That is the filter that was on the old Rocky survival site..soda can with peat moss but on the old Rocky site they did mention it was designed by Kellman and tested by the Swedish MoD to produce drinking water out of sewage contaiminated water as far as I can recollect...
Hi!
Way back I came across on a vanished U.S. survival site an emergency water filter designed by a Swedish or Norwegian fellow called Stefan Kellman/Kallman (sp.?)..you could make it out of a beer/soda can and the main filter material was bog/peat moss..I recall the site claimed the Swedish or...
Anyone here ever run across in history the mention of Frieze? Some kind of coarse woven wool material that was popular with folks who lived a long time ago. From what I remember it was thick woven stuff that would keep you warm..folks used to wear it in the days before long johns and indoor...
Hi!
Viking was showing a pic of a Swedish parka I think referred to as M90? question, is the lining removeable in the parka? Attached hood? Any idea what's the mix of the material...polyester/cotton shell or all cotton? It looks like an ideal outer shell for bushcraft..cheap and tough! I...
Thanks for the feedback everyone! About the hood, I'd have to roll it up and have a snap to keep it in place. Gary, I've already done this with a ventile jacket that I got ..the elbow patches and the reinforced shoulders add to the durability while the non-reinforced areas are wearing out...
What design features would folks like to see in a garment that would make the garment wear better and LAST longer?
I'm looking at several things..
First, I would swipe the reinforcement patches..the shoulder and elbow reinforcements from the SAS smock. Second, The cuff edges and the hem of...
Hi!
I got a pair of Russian military Spetsnaz cotton mesh long johns through a catalog and have some comments on them.
First, they are in a cotton mesh design, thick diameter mesh, you put them on and pull a sweater over the top and you will find that you are warm. The long johns are the same...
