New Evidence of Ancient Briton Immigration

I haven't even bothered with the DNA thing because it is so undefining. I have traced both sides of my family back as far as I can with records. ( 1570 Paternal 1685 Maternal ) Looked at where they and thier contemporaries lived and how much they were likely to have travelled and drawn...

Modern tech leading to dumber thoughts?

I think the problem is not that people are dumber that before but that dumb people can be heard and seen far more now than they used to be. For the unwise man 'tis best to be mute when he come amid the crowd, for none is aware of his lack of wit if he wastes not too many words Hávamál...

New Evidence of Ancient Briton Immigration

I think I may possibly have Scandinavian heritage because the oldest ancestor I can trace was called John Sæulf ( Literally "Sea Wolf" in old Norse. ) and he came from an area heavily settled by the Scandinavians kicked out of Ireland by Brian Boru but that would only be a guess. I also have...

    Snow Thermometers

Like many tools that do not come with a sharp edge or a high powered LED, I think an accurate thermometer is much underrated in the bushcraft / outdoor community. Not only can it give clues to the weather but it can also give useful information for fishing too. In snow conditions I think it is...

    Snow Thermometers

You might be able to see it on my web site here: http://www.ice-raven.co.uk/html/snow-thermometers.html but it depends on your browser settings.

    Snow Thermometers

The plastic sleeves will still be useful for transit but the brass looks much more "old school" to me.

wondering how winter hikers keep their feet dry?

If we are talking about walking in snow, a lot depends on the temperature. Above -10°c you tend to need protection from the snow which melts under pressure when you are walking in it. Below -10°c most of the moisture is usually coming from your feet. Above -10°c I use waterproof Pac-boots with...

    Snow Thermometers

I’ve been tinkering again. I wanted some spirit thermometers for working in sub zero temperatures. They are useful for tracking the weather and snow conditions. I found some simple thermometers on a brewing site that spanned the range I needed +50°c to -42°c. They came in a simple plastic case...

    Down Mat Hack

As I say, I was tipped off about this one so it’s not my invention this time.

    Down Mat Hack

A little tip I was given to speed up the inflation of my Exped Down Mat in cold conditions. The built in pump works but rather slowly when cold but the intake valve is about the right size for a brewers demijohn cork. Drill a few holes, or get one with a hole already in it. Cut the corner of a...

    Mad Idea...

It never does any harm to consider other opinions. So many people have said I should have put handles on this that I changed my mind and added some. For the very few grams they weigh they cannot do any harm. I’m also showing here another way it could be used. As a wind break with a handy shelf...

Thing is my sites collect no data so do not need to be "Secure" which would cost me hundreds more every year.

    Mad Idea...

I have used the same system for many years. All my content is hosted on my own web sites, safely and securely. Literally thousands of pictures. The fact that some browsers have changed their default settings and people cannot be bothered to change them back is not a problem that I am prepared...

    Mad Idea...

It’s already. Giving me a lot of new ideas. I suspect we won’t know the full potential until it’s been in use for a while.

The picture is hosted on my website. If your browser is set to block http content you will not be able to see it. Nothing I can do about that without spending lots of money.

    Mad Idea...

This is a Mad Idea that has taken form... The snow block cutter / mould / kitchen / windbreak. It is one of those crazy ideas I wake up with occasionally but I thought this one might have wings. It’s primary purpose is to push into wind compacted snow to cut blocks for building an igloo. If...

    Old School Shades

In fairness, the modern goggles have a better field of view and cover more of the face in extreme conditions. I will still carry a modern pair but they will probably stay in my pack for most of the time. These are lighter and I think more comfortable. Very subjective thing that.

    What did you buy today?

An eBay find. new/old snow goggles. The original lenses were cracked and de-laminated so I’ve swapped them out for some acrylic ones. Brushed up the rims a bit and they are good for another few decades I reckon. They came in a dinky little tin as well. Not sure how old there are but the...
