    What are you currently reading?

Erm...yes, I suppose in 1984 that was the case. Although I'm also not sure what difference that makes since the effect is just the same - restricting access to 'The Truth'. Also, in 1984, there is the creation of Newspeak, which purposefully limits language to restrict thought and expression.

    What are you currently reading?

Ooo! Now that's a good book. Not read that for yonks. Although I prefer Orwell, it has to be said that Huxley's vision of the future was more accurate than Orwell's. Both agreed that control of information was the way of the future, but Orwell thought it would be by restricting information...

The Merits of Scones, Cream and Jam

Stilton and red onion chutney scones sounds bloody gorgeous. Straight out of the oven, still warm...yes please.

    Radio silence and no camping

Hello Toby Firstly, welcome to BCUK. Secondly - it might be your lucky day. I have a size 2 Polish lavvuu I don't use and would be happy to part with it. And I'm not a million miles away from you - just over the border in Kent (depending on whether you're in East or West Sussex). If you want to...

If you had no ties and money wasn’t an issue, where would you move to?

I remember reading about a Canadian who, fearful that WW3 was about to kick off, and living near the US border felt he would likely cop it, decided to move to the most remote place he could find so that he'd be safe from war and the collapse of society. He moved to the Falklands two weeks before...

A great loss to the british countryside

I hear the occasional one every year, but nowhere as many as I once did. It all depends on where you are and where you go. Last year I saw one sitting on a fence and I could have sworn I took a picture of it, but I've just checked my files and I can't see it there.

Habitat with most odds off obtaining all your wild food needs in the U.K.

So we should limit ourselves to just genetically modified crops? I wonder how those herbivores and omnivores who have evolved to eat (natural) plants would feel about that, not to mention those hunter gatherer and nomadic communities who have done perfectly well for many generations? Come on...

Habitat with most odds off obtaining all your wild food needs in the U.K.

True. But some (natural) plants (could you name some 'unnatural' ones for us?) are better at it than some. Nettles are a good example of a (natural) plant that humans can consume. Or maybe it's escaped your notice that humans have been eating (natural) plants since we've existed. But, yes, some...

Habitat with most odds off obtaining all your wild food needs in the U.K.

That sounds like an awful lot of work for little return. How many calories do you expend processing it compared to what you gain from eating it? I wonder if, in a survival situation, you wouldn't be better off just eating the nettle leaves raw? You'd certainly be up on the calorie count, that's...

    Xmas Christmas ideas

Sorry to be the buzzkill, but if there's nothing you want then why waste money for the sake of it? Or what about a £50 donation, in your name, to some kind of wildlife/conservation charity? But don't waste money for the sake of it when there are, literally, millions who can't afford to eat. I...

    Archery forums..

Agreed that a sub-forum that was related to any kind of target sport (archery, shooting, shotguns, etc) would be better than an archery alone forum. Hmm...what about 'Target Sports' as a name?

    When do things hibernate?

Slow worms and adders are still active down here in the south east - saw both today.

    The “Isn't Life Great” thread

Just been for a lovely walk on the hills - clear blue sky, and a gentle cool breeze to keep fresh. Then stopped at the pub for half of a gorgeous chocolatey stout and some dry roasted nuts. And we've got shepherds pie for tea tonight. More like that, please.

    Looking for a bothie

For that first adventure, they wait until Summer is here and the weather is gentler in case of difficulties. That's when they learn. Not in the dead of Winter.

    Looking for a bothie

Crikey, I'm ever so sorry to hear about your mother. That must be terribly rough. I can understand the need to get away to clear your head. Mind you, escaping is not always the best answer, but I am sure you know you well enough. Sometimes it is best to share sorrow and grief. But, again, I am...

    Lovely Noodles

Surely if you are buying packs of noodles from Tesco and then adding a bought pack of stock powder then...what's the point? Just buy the tub of noodles as is. You've as much control over the ingredients. Yeah, making it all from scratch, I can see why someone would do that. But buying the...

Ear fungus that's been dried and powdered? That's how it's used in Asian cooking (as a thickening agent), but not sure how well it would bind with the other ingredients.

Tent/Hooped Bivi Poles For Poncho Shelter

Oh, I see what you mean. My mistake - I thought the suggestion was to use the tent as is. Yes, that's a good point. I might have a look at one in a shop first, to see how thick the poles are - but as was suggested earlier, it looks like the poles wouldn't be able to bend quite as tightly as...
