    Cheap Felling Axe project

This started off as a very cheap hickory handled Silverline felling axe. I have improved the blade profile and put a better edge on it, sanded and oiled the handle and made a simple leather handle protector. I will be making a leather blade cover for it. It will be interesting to find out...

    New knife laws

Very often, if somebody knows a bit about the subject of a news story, they will notice significant factual errors. Journalists are rarely experts.

Wear resistance of fabrics in waterproofs, esp. Paramo

I have a Velez Adventure Light smock too. It must be around 12-13 years old now. I also use it for wet cycle commuting (with panniers, not rucksack), walking etc. I rate it very highly. It is a very versatile jacket that has been more hard wearing than I expected it to be. I would not expect...

    New knife laws

There was more in the news today about a campaign to ban the sale of "Zombie knives and machetes". I'm not sure if their idea is to try to make it illegal to own one, but our reactive government, may well introduce some clumsy, ill-thought-out, legislation about it... I was using a(n 80 year...

    Warm gloves

I have been wearing my thick EDZ boiled wool gloves with army goretex mitts over them for cycling to work this week. It was -3DegC with freezing fog yesterday morning. It was -2DegC and clear this morning. My hands were warm and comfortable on both mornings and the still frosty evenings...

    Paramo waterproof fabric types?

I wore my Velez Adventure Light for my half hour cycle commute in heavy rain this morning. It worked brilliantly. I was comfortable and dry (no condensation inside either) on arrival.

I remember my Dad buying a few C&S mags, the first two issues came together.

Buy once/ last a lifetime / indestructible clothing

As a man with muscular legs/glutes (but a narrow waist, so probably not a typical US shape), I struggle to find trousers that fit. I like the US fit of 5.11 trousers with their elasticated waists. I have various pairs of different models and wear them daily for work.

In Praise of the Svord Mini

Other than the pointy end that I removed, I find the handle quite good myself. I've not had any issues with it.

    1980s Survival catalogue pages

I remember looking through a few of these catalogues as a boy, as my Dad used to get them. There was one that was in black and white that had some appealing kit in it. Some of the kit seemed really impressive at the time. Advances in materials had been made around that era, so much of it hasn't...

In Praise of the Svord Mini

I bought this knife a few years ago, after buying the bigger one. I use it regularly, and it takes quite a hammering (literally, if using it for battening) in construction work, DIY, Scouts projects, bush/camping work, including cooking and general pocket knife duties. The steel is good and it...

    Paramo waterproof fabric types?

I have had a Velez Adventure Light Smock for about 12 few years. It is very good for highly active activities in rain and snow. It wicks brilliantly. I have worn it in torrential driving rain, once memorably, in Iceland and it did keep the rain out surprisingly well, but my upper chest got a bit...

Another Wool Blanket Bush Shirt (First attempt at machine sewing and clothing)

The wool blanket Bush shirt has performed really well when I've worn it. My wife and family have even become almost accepting of my "Jesus" or "Robin Hood" outfit. The fit is really good and I like the fact that it works well and comfortably across a range of temperatures. I've worn it for hill...

    New knife laws

It is often the case that existing laws cover the required situations, but governments like to add to them, for no real change, but nuisance to law abiding people. Read "The Secret Barrister" and "Fake Law"

    New knife laws

Tories desperate for votes. Stupid, draconian, laws look good to their base on the Daily Mail front page/Website. "Ban gardening tools!" that will stop people stabbing each other. "Ban kitchen knives!" "Ban knitting needles!"

    New knife laws

Banning murder has been very successful. The death penalty has ended it in the USA too.
