Mum and I went up to the top of Stannington this morning, I took some sightings from a footpath through a field I'd been to in March.

Great place to see the eclipse! We went back with her camera, tripod, two folding chairs, glasses and filter held on with masking tape.

There was one couple there with teenage son and a colander. They were not having much success and didn't have glasses to view directly as I found out when the husband asked me how far the moon was covering the sun at about 18h20.

I'd taken five pairs of glasses, hoping that my nephew and niece (and maybe even their mum) might come with us, but no... So I offered them to the family, who insisted on buying them. I'd bought a box of 12 for something like €15… I couldn't be bothered to work out the exact price so I told them £1.50 each.

Supposedly, people have been fighting, literal fisticuffs, over these glasses.

I don't have any pictures from the camera, yet, just a few badly blurry ones from my phone, taken through the glasses.


Here's the setup. The camera is not very visible, it's a little micro 4/3 Lumix. The eclipse is to the west, so this shot is taken looking north.

Was not permitted to take the Grandkids out so watched the streaming from the Greenwich Observatory via YouTube. Last one I will ever see.

I confess to being seriously underwhelmed. I remember earlier ones being really like a too rapid night that just brightened up again.
Our skies were so overcast though that the light just sort of dulled a bit.

I went a little dark and I saw the image through a colander - nowt to shout about....

I thought it was really impressive. I think you needed something which allowed you to be able to stare at the sun properly in order to fully appreciate it though.

Well, after a slightly disappointing solar eclipse, it only went 'sombre' not dark with us even when I could only see a slither of sun, I sat out an watched some meteors - one in particular was spectacular, very fast, very bright, and left a bright trail for several seconds

I must have seen at least fifty satellites chasing each other flying west to east

I saw the partial here in west of Ireland. the difference between that and a total eclipse is the difference between a pot noodle and a Viking feast. The last one I saw was in the USA in 2017 but watching the live streams yesterday has inspired me to go to the next one which is Spain again same time next year . It will see six and half minutes of totality further on at the valley of the kings in luxor, Egypt. That wud be good. x

We went up on to the hills to watch it. It went only slightly darker.

My teenage son said it was underwhelming.

I agree with him.

I used the ‘approved by idiots” cider bottle method. It was eerie how all the birds and animals went silent. Followed by a rush of crows and pigeons panicking to get into the woods to roost as they thought they were late. Then the blackbirds making their night time clucking.

I went out about 01.00 for an hour or so and saw some spectacular ones. Colours, trails, fast, slow

I don’t know what buffoons were in charge of the eclipse in Clent, but they messed it right up. No clouds all day. Then during the 20 minute slot they put it on. ALL the clouds. It’s very annoying. I’m writing to Worcester County Council

It was great! quit you whining. many planets in the universe do not get this show. the sun and moon have to be just so sizes and the correct distances...

I made a pinhole camera; think I got some shots, have yet to download the pics.

And yes, the sky did go oddly washed out.

Had similar experience, the north west was too cloudy to really see it, just clear enough to almost see it, but no comparison to seeing the real deal back in 1999. Didn’t know the weed be another visible so close next year, interesting piece of info thanks.

Phone camera through a cheap solar filter.
To the naked eye you could see the shadow of the moon being cast across the sky, camera wouldn't pick it up though.
