Deer deterrence

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Option A - Stop producing coveted assets -
Option B - Restrict access with Border control via a Fence - But you say that's impractical , which I can believe.
Option C- Grow more sacrificial plants and accept the losses for as long as you can.
Option D - Move to a different location
Option E - Protect with force and kill the Deer

I've heard about the ZooPoo thing but I think thats just a clever little ploy dreamed up by some dragons den wannabe to sell to a gullible public.

I appreciate this may look like an allegory - its not , just listing what I think are the options.

Option G - Get a pet wolf?

There are loads of these products on the market designed to keep 2 and 4 legged pests out of your garden; I would definitely try one of these first:

Solar outdoor motion sensor alarm: Comboss Barking dog motion sensor, motion sensor dog barking sound with 2*130db Noise Maker & 13LED strobe light support Recording, dog barking alarm for home security

You own one of these? Rated as a reviewed product?

Nope, but for all the fuss of every other option I would just buy one and try it. The only problem I can see is discrimination, so setting the position and height I suspect would be crucial.

Yep -good idea to try I guess. Some of the sound options are somewhat interesting. PKS caught my eye and no doubt my ears also.

I could see a problem with neighbours if there are any. A neighbour of a friend of mine has (had, it mysteriously stopped working ;)) one of those high pitched sonic deterrent things to keep dogs or cats off. I don’t hear it but my friend can hear it going off anytime anyone or thing walks past. It was driving her crazy with the shrieking.

Thanks for all the helpful advice, folks. I think the deer has won this one. At least I did my duty by Madame by seeking your advice as she asked.

The thing is, she is a city girl, born in London and brought up there, Paris and Amsterdam and lacks an acceptance of the ways things are in rural areas. Before we got married her father asked me if I would be able to keep her in the style to which she was accustomed. I said I probably couldn't but would accustom her to the style in which I could keep her. Sixty three years later, I'm still working on it.

Deer have eaten all of Madame's tulips. Consequently a wire fence has now gone up inside the hedge abutting the copse where we know the deer hang out. Irritatingly I am just two meters short of fencing and am loath to buy a whole roll as it's too deer for this OAP as I lack the necessary bucks.

i hear herb robert isnt really liked by them - we have quite a lot in certain parts of the farm, and perhaps coincidentally, all of these places (along with a few others) we avoid stalking the deer as we typically come up empty handed.

There may be something in it, or an old local wives tale - but perhaps worth investigating further ...

Perhaps another method is to put out an aniseed/salt/copper lick in another part of the garden as a distraction. Although this may backfire if they simply bring their mates/cousins/wife/hareem for a nibble ...

I'm with the deer on this one, I've never liked the smell of herb robert.

Funnily enough we have it's relation, a cultivated pink cranesbill that spreads around the garden and the deer love it. I often only know they've been in the garden when a large area of it has been nibbled back. It doesnt have the same smell thankfully.
