    Midgies - repellents that work

My girlfriend swear by Mygga. I don't bother with repellants.

    What size is your pack?

Bergans 40L in the summer. Helsport 75L in the winter or trips where I need to carry a lot of food.

    Fuel for whisperlite, any ideas?

I have an MSR XGK and use parafin to prime/preheat and fuel it. I have had no problems what so ever going through at least 10 liters of fuel.

    Trangia pots on a fire

I have had no problem with trangia pots on open fires. The non stick kind might not take extreme heat. Just a general warning I have heard from at the hardware store when it comes to non-stick cookware. I don't know if it applies to the trangia cookware.

    Blankets vs sleeping bags

Apparantly qiviut from the muskox is the warmest wool and it's light too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qiviut Maybe these guys can make a blanket for you? http://www.moskusdesign.no/index.php

    Show us your shelters

I spent last weekend in a lean to (gapahuk). Used a self inflating groundsheet as a friend borrowed the one I usually use. I forgot to close the vent on it and got a bit chilly when the booze stopped working but the lean to was perfect! I will see if I can take a picture of it when I head into...

    Dispatching injured roadkill?

I have this baby in my car at all times. Good for digging out snowed/plowed in cars or pain relief of small animals.

    Antarctic/arctic kit

It's enough to know I don't have much to add as I have no knowledge of Antarctic climate. To me seriously cold is below 20, that's when I start considering cancelling my ski trips, to others it might be something else. But still, knowing if you are staying in base camp or skiing to/from the...

    The changing colours of landrover....

Apparantly a study showed that lime green cars are the easiest to spot on the road in the dark. So you probably have the safest landy around!

    trangia argument

I was out last weekend and used my trangia with methsburner to melt snow for drinkingwater. It took forever and I had to refill the burner several times. The good thing is it's pretty safe and I have no problem leaving it while I run around chopping wood. The MSR multifuel is not as stable when...

wierd camo tent system! Take a look! It's cool!

It's a nice system but a bit too expensive and overkill for my needs. Probably nice for trips where you are somewhat stationary. Fjellduken is a good product!

    Antarctic/arctic kit

wilderbeast: If you want some serious answers you need to ask serious questions. List of kit makers for seriously cold weather is pretty much as vague as it is possible to be. What kind of weather? What kind of activity?

What does a decent first aid kit really need ?

My First Aid Kit: - Gaffer tape - Toilet paper - can also be used to wipe behinds.

    trangia argument

I got a Trangia 27-4 UL some years ago and it served me well but it's not something I would use to boil a lot of water as the output is too low. I use an MSR XGK with kerosene now whenever a fire is not available/practical. I did bring both once but it turned out not to be worth the hassle with...
