Yep this is exactly what I mean. Good training will emphasize the assessment and analysis of the situation as the most important part of the first response. LOOK, LISTEN, THINK then Act.
OK, I did not say we should not help in a first response situation. Untrained well meaning amateurs cause all kinds of issues in emergency situations. As you stated in your response in the case of bushcrafters we are likely to encounter emergencies in locations where help may be difficult and...
park ranger type chap found me and told me go up there a bit hop over that wall in those trees and no-one will bother you :)ip and
............
anyway you'll have a cracking time, take some photos an post them up when your done :)
The wall route is now really busy and tolerance levels are...
The entire wall route is now way marked footpaths with access rights. Its clearly signed for its entire length and there are plenty of places both on and just off the wall route with camping and hostels. As stated wild camping is illegal in England without landowners permission and you will not...
I agree with Nomad. On my most recent first aid course the instructor pointed out that regardless of the FAK you carry it is pretty much useless in any situation beyond minor cuts and grazes. If medical attention is going to be required then that is the priority. The job of a first responder is...
This is an interesting thread. I am not a regular "tapper". My first experience was while pitching a wild camp and accidentally snapping a small branch from a birch. It was running freely in seconds so rather than waste it I caught it in a billy for a morning drink. I personally think the level...
Well we managed to get out On Saturday afternoon and foraged a kilo or so of rose hips. Yesterday we made them into 2 liters of rose hip syrup. Didn't get the rowans again despite finding plenty. Need another trip to Ikea for more kilner jars before we embark on more making and foraging.
Anyone looking for a lightweight high spec backpacking tent needs to see the new GO Outdoors range from OEX. The Phoxx is only 49.99 and its a better spec than my Robins. Apparently OEX is a group of ex go outdoors employees who have set up their own gear company here in the UK. The spec is very...
Yes its a great year for berries. We want about 1 kilo of each for our needs. The rose hips are no problem as there are plenty of wild roses in hedgerows in the countryside near us. The rowans however are mainly planted decorative trees in urban areas. I would prefer not to be foraging from...
This weekend the plan is to go out and harvest some rowan berries to make into rowan jelly and rose hips to make rose hip syrup. Finding the rowan berries in a location we can harvest from has proven slightly difficult. They are planted as decorative trees all over our area but as they are for...
Hi just read this thread and I wondered if anyone has tried out the quilt mentioned in a hammock. If so was it any good as an under blanket or best used as additional over blanket? I am seeing some pretty mixed reviews.
Couple of possible tips here. If you are using cookware over open fires apply a thin coating of washing up liquid to the outside of the pans before use. The outer will blacken horrendously with open fire use but this coating of washing up liquid makes it wash off really easily (obviously dont...
I only know of one sweet chestnut tree near myself. It gets plenty of chestnuts each year but the inner fruits are very small. Not sure if its the variety or the climate up here but they seem to be hardly worth the effort involved
Time is always against me. I have this idea to make a gillie blanket/poncho and every winter for the past three I've thought ok this year I'll get round to it during the dark nights...... lol one day
I got myself an old sewing machine and this has inspired me to get it out and see what I can do towards making myself some more gear. I've made a few knives and some other bits and pieces.
