    The Great Outdoors

There's a Q&A site being proposed that will allow people to share knowledge about anything related to the great outdoors. I think it would be great if more people committed to helping that site get set up. Please help launch that website if you have knowledge you could share, and or you...

    Woodland management tutorials

My sentiments exactly. I've tried in the past to offer my time and labour for woodland work, but nobody seems to want it. Woodland work must be easier than I thought! :P

Dartmoor 4 " Return Of Te Wood Smoke "...

I seem doomed never to meet you wonderful people again! :( My wife is spending that weekend with her brothers so I've got to take care of our two kids. I'm bummed; I was really hoping I could make this one. :( :( :(

How to make charcoal easy and cheap (pic heavy)

I've done it a few times and the yield is good. In addition, I also use a tin without any holes as a store for charcoal after a BBQ. Rather than let it burn to ash, when I'm done cooking I load the charcoal into a tin and seal the lid. Without Oxygen the fire starves and the charcoal is spared...

    Bushcraft banned!!

If we ever get banned from buying knives, most bushcrafters will just turn to their own communities and either make knives themselves (as many already do) and the rest of us will buy from those who can/do. Who's going to police what two bushcrafters swap in the woods?

    What is this fruit?

Good point. Here are photos of two that I cut in half. The seeds look like apple seeds, and it has almost no odour, but what I can make out reminds me of apples. Also, the fruit is firm like a fresh apple would be, not "plump" like a cherry or plum would be. IMAG0694 by bhofmann, on Flickr...

    What is this fruit?

Hi all Near where I am there is a tree that is dropping this fruit. I have no idea what it is or whether I can eat it. Can you tell me what it is please, and whether I can eat it? Bonus points for telling me how to prepare it if I need to cook it first. IMAG0690 by bhofmann, on Flickr...

    wonky email sent out

I was slightly amused by it. Just deleted it assuming someone somewhere was tinkering. It happens. Mistakes are a good thing - they show you're trying.

    Canoe paddle handle repair

The images are gone - can someone find these again please? I'd really like to see this. There's a question over on Song of the Paddle that this could answer.

So you think you are English

I was born in Cape Town South Africa, to a Swiss father and SA mother. My grandparents on my mothers side were first generation SA from England. I think my grandfather on my fathers side was Austrian, and my grandmother on my father's side is Swiss. When I turned 18, the Swiss consulate...

Hazelnut harvest - what to do with them now?

We went for a walk near Lustleigh today and were rewarded with a bag worth of hazelnuts. Though we collected them from the ground, most are still green (see photo below). My question is what to do with them now. Do I try sun drying them, stick them in the airing cupboard, or oven even to dry...

Car boot bounty (again) - an axe this time

Mooching around the car boot, on the lookout for buoyancy jackets for my new sport (canoeing) I came across the following axe. The head is clearly hand forged with hammer marks still evident. A lovely looking axe, and for £5 I simply could not resist it. Well, £4.70 actually since I'd spent 30p...
