    Spyderco Puukko

For those who might be planning on actually using this knife, be aware that I bought one, used it, and found the bottom edge of the handle painfully thin when used in a hammer grip to cut wood -- as did four others. Spyderco informs me, in the course of telling me they "can not" do anything...

What r the top 10 survival skills?

Most respectfully, and allowing for the difference between the UK and other areas, day hikers were very disproportionately the folks we were called out to find when I was in an SAR group in California. There at least, and in other places as well, a more complete attention to survival needs...

What r the top 10 survival skills?

We have had a couple of statistical studies on this side of the Pond as to what people die from in the wilderness. The studies all concluded that about 75% of the fatalities come from about equal portions of: 1) falls; 2) drowning; and 3) heart attacks. Must be some lessons there about needs...

    Svord Peasant Knife

Sorry. Didn't know. Wow. Culture shock. I got mine from NZ before Ragnar carried them and before they were on eBay. Came very charp and hold the edge well. Just wish the end of the tang was flat rather than a loop that sticks up when the knife is open.

    British flint firelighting

I was taught, as with the flintlock mechanism, to strike the fire steel with the flint to shave steel, heating it with the friction. I see Mears teaches the same technique in Outdoor Survival Handbook. I pin the tinder down with a piece of old file and flail away. The file helps channel the...

    batoning with a knife

When I took SAR training in 1964, we were taught "splitting wood with a knife" (Does that sound better than "clubbing"? :) ) I don't do it all that frequently. Most of the time, the wood burns "as is." Sometimes there is an axe about. But over the years I have done it dozens of times with...

    Teepee`s and cooking

One issue about cooking inside your tipi or tent would be attracting unwanted "guests." Our neighbors at Scout Summer Camp a couple years ago cooked inside a large wall tent during a day of non-stop rain. Spills on the grass inside the tent were mostly cleaned up. That night, Mr. (or...

    Pukka Kit or not?

This item is a ... hmmmmmmmmmmm... modification of a tool that's been around for twenty years. I was cozzened into trying the original model gripped in the "axe" mode. Afterwards, my wrist felt like it had struck repeatedly with a bat (either sort of bat :( ) and I had blisters on the fingers...

    Tam 'O' Shanter

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beret The "tams" worn by Canadian Forces in WWII (I have my dad's), are as described in the above Wiki article. Variations on the same theme - larger or smaller, brimmed or no.

Seems to be true as I found a quartz arrowhead in a ditch in West Virginia ages ago. (Well, years, if not ages.) Can strick sparks from steel with it.

    Swedish Army M90 Parka

The M90 parka arrived today. Nice features and nicely made in Sri Lanka. Very impressive zipper and practical pockets, as noted above. The vendor may have sent the wrong size. If sized correctly, it is rather tight-fitting for an "XL/TG" military parka. Not as much room under for other...

    Swedish Army M90 Parka

A surplus company was selling them a couple of years ago for $9.99 U.S. The ones in OD were $19.99. They were sold as new and the one I received certainly did not seem to have been worn.

    Swedish Army M90 Parka

Thank you for all the good information about the M90 parka. It convinced me to buy one. Only one vendor seems to have them in my size on this side of the pond, but the price was very good. Many vendors on your side seem to have them. I will shortly have two Swedish parkas. I already had...
