Well I watched Dances with Wolves again at the weekend, saw it for the first time in a long while earlier this year and was pretty fascinated by it and the culture.

But it got me thinking about the names used which were more descriptive of the person (or feats) compared to the names we are given here which some are more based on the current celebrities or naming after some other famous person.

In the film there was the obvious Dances with Wolves name which came about due to Costner playing around with the wolf whilst the Sioux watched on.

So I was wondering if you were to be given a name what would it be? Sometimes its better if the name is given to you by those who know you, as for myself I find it difficult to sit and think of something like that. Or if you know a name that would fit someone else on the forum that you know and wouldn't mind one feel free to post (without being rude).

This excludes the commonly used idiot and other expletives. :p

Great film pandabean!!! I love it! I always wish i could have been raises as a Native American Indian, just everything about them is fascinating!! iv had a few nick names over the years from close friends. One of the most obvious ones is 'Cowboy', as im obsessed with anything western orientated!!! And the second at my old work place being 'Hatts' due to always wearing a cowboy hat. It got to the point were some staff didnt actually know my real name lol..

I no theres nothing Native about them, i just thought id share!

I went to school with kids that had surnames like 'Standing on the Road', 'Bigsky', etc. Good stuff. Makes me miss Saskatchewan! Great film by the way...

Used to get called psycho in my football playing days. I think we all had names based on our footballing style, my partner at centre half got called hacker.

You don't have to be good at football when everyone is scared to come near you with the ball lol.

Taking 'Dances with Wolves' as it's inspiration, you could always be 'Meanders with Pandas'

I got a sort of unmentionable nickname at the weekend ...

swmbo desperately needed to sneeze ~ and each time she tried, I did the evil monkey* on her

* If you catch someone about to sneeze, point at them and it almost always stops the sneeze.

I might try that next time, usually to annoy I go "ssshhh" after each loud sneeze the girlfriend does, quite amusing until she gets annoyed with it.

I'd probably get 'Spends lots on Gadgets' - full name of 'Spends lots on Gadgets Then Hardly Uses Them' :(

I live in a fairly small village & they have some great (if harsh) nicknames:

There's a guy called 'Gizinty' - he's in his 70's now, but when he was at school he didn't call the sums division, he called them gizintys (goes into's - but in a Scots mining town accent).
Then there's the guy who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given 6 months to live, 6 years later he's still attending the pub, fishing etc - he's called Rigor Mortis (Rigor to his friends).

For me, maybe "falls from choppers" from the embarrassingly large amount of rotary aircraft i have departed while they are and aren't in contact with the ground, some on purpose, others by complete accident:eek:

We have native names for a few folk round my way

Five Teeth Keith - only has 5 teeth.
John the Cow - herdsman.
Capri Keith - drives a Capri.
Terry the Soul Sapper - drains the life out of you with his weary demeanour.
Bobfoc - Ex barmaid with a body off Baywatch and face off Crimewatch. Sometimes called Kronenbourg - 16 from the back, 64 from the front.
Boss-eyed Sue - Can sit on the front porch and count the chickens in the backyard
